Re: Problems mounting NFS share

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately it's not relevant to my question - I do not have any issues with fstab as you can see from the OP.

Problems mounting NFS share

Hi guys, Running LM19.3. I have successfully installed nfs on both the server and client and I can even mount a directory on the client as below: sudo mount -o rw,hard, intr,bg 192.168.1.20:/ /media/user/NFS Obviously I have the following entry on the server side in /etc/exports /media/user/SHARED 19...

How secure is rsync with no password sudo?

Hi guys, I need to backup files with various attributes from a client to a server (both on LM19.3). One of the solutions which preserves their source attributes is to run rsync over ssh, something like that: rsync -a --rsync-path="sudo rsync" -e ssh /media/user1/source user2@server:/media/user2/dest...

Copying files with various ownership to samba server

Yet another samba ownership question. I'm using a samba server as a backup media by copying local files to a mounted location. My local files is a mix of files owned by both user and root (yes there's some plain text credentials files which are owned by root and have no rwx access to anybody else, s...

Re: Update woes, 19.3 to 20

Just two cents based on my experience, which may or may not be very helpful (and probably not directly relevent): Even though you may be lucky in solving your issue, and despite what developers of operating systems want you to believe (Window, Linux etc), it's probably safe to assume that everything...

Re: [SOLVED] Incremental backup - what app are you guys using?

In the end I settled on writing my own rsync script. Here's my thoughts I hope will help somebody: USE CASE: A small office 3-5 workstations with files on local as well as on a file server, a couple of servers. Less than 4TB of user data. We do not need encryption as our volumes are encrypted. We do...

Re: backintime freezes with "end loop"

I found a debug flag, so here's a bit more output. Nothing particular stands out for me. There are a couple of errors but they seem to be just warnings: INFO: [qt4systrayicon] begin loop DEBUG: [common/snapshots.py:1357 Snapshots._take_snapshot] Command "rsync -rtDHh --l..." returns 0 DEBUG: [common...

[ABANDONED] backintime freezes with "end loop"

Hi guys, I have two backintime profiles one running a local backup (profile-id #1), and one to another server (profile-id #2). I run it with the following command: sudo -i backintime --config /root/.config/backintime/config --backup-job The first profile runs fine and backs up everything as expected...

Re: backintime permission error

I think this is how backintime schedules itself - I did not add anything to cron myself. Hence was my question.

Re: [SOLVED] backintime permission error

I have just a few files with restricted permissions including for credentials used by services. For instance I have the samba credentials file owned by root and moded to -r------- under /home/user/apps/linux/samba/ where apps/ in /home/user/ is a directory mounted from a different partition. Then I ...

Re: [SOLVED] backintime permission error

Backintime can be run as both user and root. When you type the name in the Linux search box (by pressing Windows key) just select the one which says (root).

[ABANDONED] backintime permission error

I am trying backintime for incremental backup. And although most files are being backed up alright, backintime does not seem to copy root owned files if the application is run in a user space. I get the following error (when scheduled backintime runs are run by cron): Back in Time: Main Profile Erro...

Thank you.

Also, will this be true for backintime?

Timeshift just leverages the ability and presents it in a clean format.

Re: incremental backup question

Regarding btrfs vs zfs - I've been reading about zfs and snapshoting for some time already and I was mulling over implementing it at some stage when I have a few weeks to spare on deploying it (as everything new it takes me in Linux). So the question is - the functionality of an incremental backup i...

it gives me the following error stack:

Code: Select all

/etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc: 3: exec: /usr/bin/X: not found
xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused
xinit: server error

[SOLVED] incremental backup question

This may be a misguided question, but I was wondering if it's possible to run an 'incremental' backup (e.g. with BackInTime or anything else for that matter) such that the base files ARE NOT copied when the very first snapshot is created? I struggle to find any references to this, so I'm thinking th...

Re: cinnamon does not start on boot

No, I have set it up as a standard LM 19.3 with cinnamon desktop. Before I installed tigervnc it worked fine. There seems to be some configuration which disables a DE on the server completely, i.e. I cannot even output the sound after the remote VNC connection has been setup. It has something to do ...
