Re: Dual Boot with Windows on 5TB hard disk - GPT Query

To install Mint in MBR will be tricky because you already have four primary partitions. Hi pbear, I can delete the S: drive - there's currently nothing in it. Partitions now look like this: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49570022857_ba867c8dde_z.jpg Windows doesn't seem to want to merge the 18...

Re: Dual Boot with Windows on 5TB hard disk - GPT Query

Sorry Pierre Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 - Version 6.1 (Build 7601: Service Pack 1) All updates have been applied (save for KB4539601 which refuses to do so). Just checking that indeed KB4490628 and KB4474419 are installed as they are prerequisites for KB4539601. KB4490628 was already installed and K...

Re: Dual Boot with Windows on 5TB hard disk - GPT Query

Okay, I think I'm getting a handle on this. The following is a screenshot of Windows' Disk Manager (it can't tell me anything about the unallocated partition) as it can't see past 2TB. ] https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49568908826_d7d562851a_z.jpg If I install Mint "alongside" Windows, it will u...

Re: Dual Boot with Windows on 5TB hard disk - GPT Query

Thanks once again pbear for your reply. These are really quite helpful. As well as the OEM's Recovery Disk, I have a Win 7 iso d/loaded from Microsoft - I presume that is what you are referring to as an installation disk? I'm pretty sure my Mobo supports UFEI, the pc in question dates from January 2...

Re: Dual Boot with Windows on 5TB hard disk - GPT Query

Hi pbear

Yes, I do - the original manufacturer's 'Revovery' disk which contains Win 7.

However, couldn't I boot from a Linux USB flash drive and use Gparted instead?

Re: How to Dual Boot with existing Win 7 Installation

I have tried to clone my existing 1TB Windows 7 hard disc to a larger 2TB disc. Took bloomin' ages - however the clone won't boot. I've put a Win 7 installation disc into the optical drive and selected 'Repair'. The installation disc is now trying to repair the clone. Now I realise that this is a L...

Re: Dual Boot with Windows on 5TB hard disk - GPT Query

G'day Pierre - many thanks for that reply. Some follow-ups if I may ... 1) Change the partition scheme to GPT - correct? This will only work if the BIOS supports UFEI = coorect? If the BIOS does support UFEI, change to that. It won't affect access to the already cloned drive - correct? 2) Gmarted is...

Dual Boot with Windows on 5TB hard disk - GPT Query

Hi Folks, Slowly getting where I want to be (!) Have successfully cloned my existing Windows 7 installation from a 2TB Seagate Barracuda onto a 5TB Toshiba X300 hard disk. I have used the MBR partition scheme - unaware that this limits Windows to seeing only 2TB* of the 5TB drive (* actually 1.8TB)....

Re: New Linux (Mint) User - Can you recommend a good 'Starter Guide'?

Hi folks Hello, Mr. President! Glad you made it back safely from the restaurant at the end of the universe. How's Trillian doing these days? :D She's good thanks. There's a cat who really knows where her towel is at. She just went off to make a cup of really strong tea before heading off to Kakrafo...

Re: New Linux (Mint) User - Can you recommend a good 'Starter Guide'?

Thank you for the replies.

I will check out those links posted - they look like the sort of thing I had in mind.

Any books?

I gather that "sudo" means 'Super User do' - much like Window's elevated command prompt?

New Linux (Mint) User - Can you recommend a good 'Starter Guide'?

Hi folks, Before anyone kicks off about search engines, what I'm after is a recommendation for a good 'Get into Linux (Mint) Starter Guide ' - don't care whether it is in on-line or book form - to help me get to grips with Linux. If in book form, a title and an ISBN would be fantastic. There seem to...

Linux Tiny Core - some questions

Hi folks, I know that this is a Linux Mint Forum but some history first - please bear with me. My wife has a 1 year-old Windows 10 pc with a 1TB Seagate Barracuda Pro in it. She turned it on yesterday and got the message 'Default Boot Device Missing'. I went to the Seagate site and d/loaded the Seat...

Re: How to Dual Boot with existing Win 7 Installation

it's been a over a year, since the last Installation, on one of my win-7 machines, but, from memory, you should be able to use the "install along-side" option, then at some point, there is an screen, where you can use your mouse to adjust a slider-bar, that enables the win-7 partition to be shrunk,...

Okay ... that's interesting. I posted a reply yesterday thanking decrepit, pbear and kadaitcha for their replies and suggestions - but the post seems to have completely vanished. In that post I regretfully declined kadaitcha's kind offer to do the install for me in return for first-class return air ...

How to Dual Boot with existing Win 7 Installation

Hello folks. I have an existing Win 7 installation on this machine (a 10 year-old Sony Vaio laptop with an Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 2GHz and 2TB HDD and 4GB RAM) and also a Win 7 installation on a 5 year-old desktop with an Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM and 2TB HDD. I don't want to install Windows 10 and rel...

Re: Puzzled - downloaded program and intslled it - but WHERE is it?

@phd21 Ahh... A light-bulb bursts into life! The CODE: SELECT ALL is a Forum Command - not one built into Linux Mate (correct?) Rather like the voucher code websites where they have an option to copy the code to Windows' clipboard. Very nifty! And yes, Google Chrome now appears in the list of applic...
