I can, it's designed that way. :D

When I press the super key I see the cursor in the search box, so it's expecting input from my keyboard and not my mouse.

A bit of a guess here, but I think that as your Chip is a bit elderly (11/22/2007) it may be ‘exposed’ but the kernel etc have been patched.
