Re: run aol on linux

Pidgin supports AIM no? I don't personally use it but I hear it works fine.

Re: broken package manager

It's a bug in mintMenu. I'm sure they'll iron it out soon as I've seen quite a few people come across this issue on IRC and this forum.

Re: All I can say is WOW

Running 1440x900 here no problems, was auto detected when I installed the nvidia driver.
Guess it really depends on your video card / monitor as I've never had a problem with this resolution.

Re: /etc/issue rewritten on reboot

You can avoid this rewrite of /etc/issue by editing: /etc/linuxmint/mintSystem.conf

Code: Select all

[global]
enabled = True
[restore]
lsb-release = True
etc-issue = False
splash-screens = True
ctrl-alt-backspace = True
update-grub = True

Re: How do I change the wallpaper the screen lock is using?

Subsequent updates of MintSystem revert the changes to /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults/%gconf-tree.xml as expected so a more permanent solution might be to simply replace the default image. Then again, another update may also replace the images in /usr/share/backgrounds though I'd wager it's less like...

It likely doesn't help but on a machine of those specs I doubt you'd see any major improvement. Worth a shot if you can get the restricted driver working for that chipset.

Re: Linux security.

In Mint 7 the root password is automatically set as your first users password. Not sure if this happened previously.

Edit:

Or why this choice was made in the first place come to think of it.

Re: How did you come up with your user name?

nandemonai roughly translates as 'It's nothing' in Japanese, depending on context. Why I chose it? I love Japanese culture and language. Also some personal reasons. Mostly though, I'm a NiN fan and up till 2004 Trent's record company was called 'Nothing Records'. *shrugs* I've been using this nick f...

Re: boot up / shutdown / hibernate / suspend problems

Some specs on the hardware you're running would really be helpful.

If you're unsure you can post back the output of the following commands from terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -v 5
If inxi is unavailable then:

Code: Select all

uname -a

Code: Select all

free -m

Code: Select all

df -h

Code: Select all

lspci

Code: Select all

Very odd issue. I've never seen that happen before.

My first thought is compiz. Are you running desktop effects?

Not so helpful after the fact but..

ALWAYS copy first then delete. Moving can be troublesome. As you now know.

Re: /etc/issue rewritten on reboot

Thanks again for the info Husse. Yeah, I was a little confused about it myself. The /etc/issue file has been like that since install, I noticed it when I was logging in on tty for the first time which then had me changing it by adding a carriage return but it wouldn't stick. Odd indeed. I'll do a li...

Re: NFS upload/download ratio

Not sure what to tell you guys.

I get 11905KB/s down / 273KB/s up when downloading from a NFS share on my server. T-Base 100 Ethernet full duplex. Perhaps just the overhead of wireless? Have you tried any tests with other application layer protocols like HTTP / SAMBA etc?

Curious.

Re: pidgin problem

Search the forum, it's a known issue. Yahoo has dropped support on most of their servers for the older authentication method used by pidgin. You'll have to install the latest version from the pidgin PPA. You could try changing the paging server for your Yahoo account to: cn.scs.msg.yahoo.com Though ...

Re: problems with suspend and shutdown

As for the sleep issue (suspend) you can try this: http://people.freedesktop.org/~hughsien ... index.html

Not sure on the Gnome error on shutdown though I doubt it's anything to be too concerned about unless it's not working on next boot.

Re: Which Edition or a different distro on hp ze4500?

Running flash video on a machine with that little RAM is going to have issues, not matter what Distro of Linux you're using. If possible your best bet is to stick some more RAM in there. The Video card could also be an issue. That said you could opt for a lighter desktop environment like openbox / f...

Re: /etc/issue rewritten on reboot

There is a /etc/lsb-release in Mint - if you don't have it is an error in your system /etc/issue is reset by mintSystem and is used for more than log in Other cases when an identification is needed I don't want to give you a flawed answer so I have to check if it is used for what I think it is so I...

That's a file that you should not tamper with It should read what it reads - period It can read Linux Mint 7 Gloria - Main Edition \n \l or something else according to what you have and if it reads something else you may find you are in trouble Care to elaborate on that for me Husse? I was under th...
