Re: Safe to upgrade to LM17?

The release candidate for KDE looks like it's ready, so when the download is available I'd try running that from the CD or a USB stick first. If all seems well, backup your data and do a fresh install. It's not a final release but I've never had any serious glitch with the RC KDE distros so it shoul...

Re: Note syncing between Linux and Android, anybody ???

I use an application called B-Folders which is free on Android, and you can buy a desktop version. It's not pricey, and you get a free trial on it :) But it has a native Linux desktop version and the sync is encrypted and direct over Wifi so you don't rely on any external cloud service. It's really ...

Re: Love/Hate Relationship with learning Linux

Like many of my personal relationships, I'm having a pretty severe Love/Hate with Linux. It's only been a couple of months since I've started using this system, and I've had equal parts of smiling in jubilation and wanting to put my foot through my monitor. There's a very old and popular post at th...

Re: Firefox browser

I find quite few programs on Linux where I'm having to re-enable a menu these days, when it's been shrunk into a gear or an icon with a few lines in it. Firefox isn't the only culprit, sadly. If only someone thought to make the remaining icon read "menu" instead of a gear or lines, I'd get...

Re: Can It really run everything?

The way I tackled my transition to Linux was to figure out what Windows software I wanted to run on Linux and I looked each package up on the Wine website http://appdb.winehq.org/ . There you'll find guides and often a good indication of how well the software will run under Wine. Often with a list o...

Re: Ubuntu wants to start charging for use of repros by Mint

It's great that this is amicable between Mint and Canonical now, but I wonder if it might be worth starting a transition to either another base or building one for Mint. Even as a side project. I know there's Debian, that would probably be my fallback for Mint if it comes to it. I just don't want Mi...

Re: Mint 13 Maya Xfce is in testing! Woo hoo!

I installed the RC yesterday... I've got the wee border glitch that others report but otherwise I haven't hit a single error or glitch yet. Fantastic job as always, graphics driver installed great, sound is working fine. Internet connection worked first time, as did updating. I Installed a fair pile...

Re: GIMP stays in all workspaces

Ok, try this...Right click on the top title bar of your Gimp window. In the drop-down menu that appears, below the maximise and minimise options etc, look for the option "Only on This Workspace" and select it. If that fixes it, you possibly selected "Always on visible workspace" ...

Agreed!

I'm really enjoying XFCE as a desktop now so I can't wait to try the new Mint flavoured one :)

Re: Why do Windows users get such a bad rap?

I really don't read "windoze" as an attack on windows users, but the OS itself. And if I'm honest, among my geeky friends, there are easily as many comments about linux as there are windows. I've personally called Gnome 3 and Unity far worse names than I've ever used on windows lol. I don'...

Re: leaving Mandriva and coming to Mint

That's a strange one. The only thing I can think of is to boot from a Mandriva live CD and see if you can choose a destination and restore your backup onto your new distro. I have no idea if it would work, it's a while since I used Mandriva properly so I can't remember it in great detail. I suspect,...

Re: leaving Mandriva and coming to Mint

I'd try opening up the archive rather than telling it to extract. Then just drag out the specific folders eg music, documents into your new home folder. See how that works.

Re: KDE vs Gnome ?

I'd certainly pick KDE over Gnome these days. I don't think there's a KDE distro that I'd rate below Gnome in its current state, Gnome 3 needs to mature and I really hope the Gnome Foundation look at things like MATE and Cinnamon and understand that a lot of users want something more like an evoluti...

Re: Linux Mint KDE news

I'll be delighted if Mint KDE can come with the option of a Ubuntu base for V12 and beyond. Not everyone wants Debian or Gnome 3 :) With Gnome 3 now on the main edition and the other Debian editions already, I think it's good to have one alternative on a base like KDE. I've never had any trouble usi...

Re: Mint users on Ubuntu forums

I can't really say much about the Ubuntu forums, I only dipped my toe there when I started with Kubuntu years ago and needed a bit of help. They seemed ok. My boyfriend is a Ubuntu lad, he does mention a bit of drama but more in terms of "it's a big board and hard to control". We're funny,...

Re: Before removing a HD, what changes should I make in Isad

Great, thanks for the advice everyone - HD is now out and I'm booting up just fine :) I'd installed Izzy with just the main HD in the case so I knew the bootloader was on it, so I just commented out the Win XP entry in grub.cfg, pulled the drive and it booted up a treat when I powered up again. Than...

Before removing a HD, what changes should I make in Isadora?

I've got 2 hard drives in my PC, one of which I want to remove. However it's my old Windows XP drive and XP is listed in the current boot menu. What changes do I need to make in Isadora before I pull the drive out? I don't want to upset Grub 2 by simply pulling the drive ;)

Thanks,

Re: Would Linux be more popular with LESS choice?

I don't think too much choice is damaging Linux. What I found more awkward as a newbie was the lack of documentation written in a way that a beginner could learn from - a lot of enter this command then these ones and very little "this command does x, if it breaks you should try y". The fun...

Broken mintUpdate and package lists

Ok, I'm a bit of a Linux noob, so please be gentle with me :) I'm using Mint 7 Gloria (gnome desktop) My updater is showing as a broken padlock (could not refresh the list of packages). When I go into terminal and try "sudo apt get update" I get the following error: Reading package lists.....
