watchdog: BUG: soft lockup
When I attempted to wake my laptop this morning it was not responsive. I tried various key combinations without results up to and including ctl-alt-del and had to power down the machine. Looking in syslog I see: Apr 19 09:02:59 Z560 kernel: [42220.136272] watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for...

intermittent phantom SCSI drive on bootup
For the past few days when I reboot my laptop I have been having intermittent problems with a phantom SCSI drive causing problems. When it occurs I see the following in dmesg: [ 7.749121] kernel: usbcore: registered new interface driver usbhid [ 7.755807] kernel: scsi host0: ahci [ 7.756877] kernel:...

I have 80 files consuming 2G in /var/log/journal/ tree!
As noted in the subject I have 2G of storage being consumed in a sub-directory of /var/log/journal with a 30-odd hex digit name. The date on the files range from today back to September, 2022. What is in these files? What is the proper way to remove any that are no longer necessary? How can I keep i...

depmod hangs with 5.15.0-94 kernel
I had recently installed the 5.15.0-94 kernel and attempted to install a virtualbox update today. The install hung when it ran depmod in the process of updating the DKMS modules. I had to kill the update and recover from that. After trying several approaches to completing the install, all of which h...

Re: Removing kernel does NOT remove related /usr/src tree
I have just upgraded to the 5.15.0-94 kernel. The install created the following sub-directories in /usr/src: linux-headers-5.15.0-94-generic linux-hwe-5.15-headers-5.15.0-94 After the install I removed the 5.15.0-89 kernel via the mint update kernel listing. This did remove the linux-headers-5.15.0-...

Re: where does synaptic store its filter definitions?
Hello, dhdurgee. In all cases where Synaptic has been launched with root privileges (which will be the case usually), the Synaptic settings can be found inside the directory tree /root/.synaptic. The main file of interest will be synaptic.conf. In order to reset root's synaptic setings to default, ...

Re: where does synaptic store its filter definitions?
Nothing in that directory tree is recent and I made this error yesterday. So it isn't anywhere in that tree.

where does synaptic store its filter definitions?
I was attempting to add some custom filters to my synaptic configuration and somehow managed to clobber the filters that were provided with synaptic. All of the filters now reflect my custom filter as opposed to what they were originally. Where does synaptic store these definitions? I would like to ...

Re: Removing kernel does NOT remove related /usr/src tree
I just thought to check what synaptic showed and searching for "linux-hwe" shows as "installed" the headers from 0-46 on to 0-91 here. I manually removed the directories for 0-46 to 0-88, so perhaps I should have used synaptic to remove them. Does this give a clue to my problem? ...

Re: Removing kernel does NOT remove related /usr/src tree
Yes, I am running LM20.3 here as well. Are you upgrading kernels as they come available? I have been updating shortly after each new release and from my experience none of the related source directories had been removed when I removed the older kernel afterward. I install the newer kernel using the...

Re: Removing kernel does NOT remove related /usr/src tree
I have been having problems with my root drive being almost full for a while. Today I checked into this and found about 3G of /usr/src directories related to kernels that have been removed after I updated to the supported kernel. These files should be deleted when the kernel is removed as well. I h...

I had to restart my system this morning as it became partially non-responsive. System monitor showed low CPU but constantly increasing load. memtest86+ 5.01-3 has problems, how to update it?
I installed memtest86+5.01-3 using synaptic from the repository as I wanted to test my memory. When I boot to run it my system freezes. I did a search and it appears that this is a known problem with that release: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/memtest86+/+bug/1876157 The solution appears...
