Re: [SOLVED] USB sound card

I figured I would make a post here to list a couple of USB sound cards that work on Linux Mint v19.3 (and I would assume newer versions of Linux Mint to)... -Sabrent AU-MMSA -TROND AC2-P (this one says it's TRRS which supposedly works with a headset with a built-in microphone. but I have not tested ...

Re: Repair a Crucial 250GB SSD

Thanks for the tips. I have deleted partitions, written zeros, redone partition tables etc. To properly and completely delete all data on a SSD a 'secure erase' can be preformed (which only takes a handful of seconds to do basically once it starts). once you issue a secure erase, all data that was ...

Re: Repair a Crucial 250GB SSD

Once you boot from the Mint installation media, have you tried running GParted and wiping the SSD and then try the Mint installation with EXT4?

Re: Min spec for Mint 20 hard to find?

In short... I tend to agree with 'carum carvi' as while officially Mint claims 1GB of RAM as a minimum, and 2GB as a recommended minimum, I would say double each of those is probably a bit more accurate if you don't want to push things on the edge and want a usable computer outside of some very basi...

Re: What are the benefits of doing a fresh-install of Mint 20 VS upgrading from 19.3?

I would imagine the general word is... -Small upgrades (i.e. 19/19.1/19.2/19.3)... are okay. -Major upgrades (i.e. 19.x to 20.x)... do a clean install. basically it's just safer to clean install major versions since you can help ensure everything will be in optimal running order. doing a upgrade it'...

Re: reverting from 20 to 19.3 via timeshift

Personally I prefer Clonezilla as it runs from bootable media and it gives you a 100% restore back to the point of when you initially imaged it. so anything changed after that will be gone. so even if a upgrade to v20 completely hosed your system, with Clonezilla it will be like that never happened....

Re: Moving from 18.3 to 20

Secondarily, my wife is running an up to date version of LM 19 on relatively new HP laptop, but she is actually having issues regularly with the system locking up on her, keyboard stops functioning, etc. Wondering about upgrading her as well and what people's thoughts are. If you clean installed Mi...

Re: ACPI BIOS Error (bug)

If you disable AHCI in the computers BIOS (like switch to 'IDE mode' on the SATA ports) that bug will likely go away. but, to my knowledge... AHCI is best for maximum SATA performance so I would not disable the AHCI in the PC's BIOS. In short, I would probably not worry about it as I suspect your co...

Re: LM20 upgrade question

I got that message to. I just did the following from terminal... sudo apt install default-jre that should install it and get it working so you can upgrade. at least it worked for me. p.s. but I am currently on v19.3 as, in short, v20 does not like my system. so I just restored my Clonezilla image I ...

@arvy Very sorry about your continuing problems and also sorry that I couldn't be more helpful, but those two installation alternatives are the only ones I know about. At the very least... I got to thank you for your time/patience with your attempted help ;) If, as you say, you've tried each system ...

Re: Mint v20 | hard drives not shown in file manager after clean installation...

Well I attempted the Mint v20 upgrade hours ago, the upgrade completed, but the problem remains as even though my hard drives are mounted, it's due to my previous manual use of UUID to mount them to a specific location etc (i.e. /etc/fstab). but basically USB sticks are not automatically mounted so ...

Re: Mint v20 | hard drives not shown in file manager after clean installation...

@arvy Your Mint 19.3 installation was installed on a drive with a Master Boot Record (MBR) and "msdos" partitioning for booting by your system in "legacy" (what you call "standard") mode. but I have already done this before. it has no effect. the bug remains in Mint v20...

Re: Mint v20 | hard drives not shown in file manager after clean installation...

@arvy Sorry, ill try to make things easier to understand. but this should make it nice and easy to understand with much less words... 1) I used Mint v19.3-Cinnamon's 'USB Image Writer' to write the Mint v20-Cinnamon ISO to the 4GB SD card connected to USB card reader. 2) Reboot computer and upon com...

Re: Mint v20 | hard drives not shown in file manager after clean installation...

@arvy I suppose the only logical conclusion one can possibly derive from the information as stated thus far is that, if two Mint ISO downloads that were burned in the same way to the same installation media are producing different results, it's quite possible that the unwanted results may be due to ...

Re: Mint v20 | hard drives not shown in file manager after clean installation...

Anyone else have any suggestions/fixes? ; as USB thumb drives (and general USB devices) and my additional hard drives are not shown in the file manager like typically expected even though 'lsblk' does see the hard drives. because recently, just to confirm, I backed up my current Mint v19.3-Cinnamon ...

Re: [SOLVED] Cannot mount memory stick

@milan777 That's nice and all but it's not a proper fix as the OS itself should just see the USB stick etc (like additional hard drives) in the file manager straight up after a basic clean installation, but it does not. a couple of other people I was talking to on another forum do not have this issu...

Re: Cannot mount memory stick

I cannot access my memory stick, it is not being displayed on the file manager. I have the exact same issue with plugging in USB thumb drives as they don't show up at all in the file manager but are seen by the 'lsblk' command AND it does this with all of my other hard drives to which are all EXT4 ...

Re: MINT 20 missing DVD RW

I also noticed DVD burning does not work on Mint v20 but does work on v19.3.

like burning a simple ISO (like Mint v20 for example) on 'Xfburn' throws a "Burn mode is not currently implemented." error. but there is no issues on Mint v19.3 as it just works.

Re: Mint v20 | hard drives not shown in file manager after clean installation...

@arvy Yes, it's AHCI mode which I heard we want to use for SATA and no, I am not using RAID or anything else. it's been this way for a long time before I installed Mint v19 on it and Mint v19.x works perfect. so I would assume there is some sort of bug tied to Mint v20 but I have no idea what it is....

@ arvy Which boot mode: "legacy" or UEFI? For the latter, the installer will always put the Grub boot loader into the first EFI System Partition (ESP) that it finds with a boot flag, even if you do tell it to install the boot loader to some other ESP. when booting from SD card reader with ...
