Re: Freezes / complete lock-ups

I just had another crash/freeze. What is interesting about this one, is that the mouse pointer was still responsive after the sound-repeat set in. Therefore, it seems the bus may not be 100% locked up. The mouse interrupt must have been responding properly, and I/O to/from the mouse must have been f...

What specific type and model of drive are you attempting this on?
A Seagate ST1000LM049-2GH172 according to hdparm.

Making a FAT32 filesystem - mkfs.fat

Hi all, I'm trying (or playing) to create a FAT32 file system of the maximum size possible within the parameters of 1 sector per cluster and logical sector size 512. According to information from various Internet sizes, the maximum number of clusters on FAT32 is 2^28-1, and with 512 byte cluster siz...

So I take it that intel_idle.max_cstate=1 did not work.
That's right. It's too early to tell if the BIOS upgrade helped.

Re: Freezes / complete lock-ups

I updated the BIOS to version A16.

I have scheduled the "intel_iommu=off" option for the next boot.

Re: Freezes / complete lock-ups

As a summary then I'd still try 1. intel_idle.max_cstate=1 In progress -- so far so good. 2. Noticed the intel_iommu=on thing you were using: perhaps drop that. Come to think of it I actually once had an issue with that on a Xeon of similar vintage even though I don't recall specifics. I suppose yo...

Re: Freezes / complete lock-ups

You're right, it is best to test the "idle" parameter on its own, and I don't really want to be running with "nomodeset" because part of what I do routinely is to run the Firestorm viewer for Second Life . I guess it is time to start thinking about getting a new laptop. But a new Dell Precision is c...

Crashed again at 09:45 UTC.

Now trying kernel options: "dis_ucode_ldr nomodeset intel_idle.max_cstate=1".

There was already another crash/freeze, at 19:35 UTC yesterday. This is despite disabling the microcode update. Re: Freezes / complete lock-ups

Thank you for your in-depth response. Linux does in fact do the microcode update, apparently before it does anything else. The "dis_ucode_ldr" kernel argument is scheduled for the next boot. I'm not particularly concerned about Spectre, but the Meltdown attack seemed pretty damn serious to me (I rea...

As to MCEs, sure, but what I would do is try another PSU at this point.
A Power Supply Unit? This is a laptop, and the battery is still good enough to allow running for a while without the PSU attached.

Re: Freezes / complete lock-ups

I had a crash today between 11:10 and 12:42 UTC. I've been doing clearly better after upgrading to Linux kernel 5.3+.

I'm sorry to report that there was a freeze in the past night at 00:30 UTC :(

I've upgraded the kernel again, but I don't think that's going solve it.

Re: Cinnamon 19.x Power Settings - How to expand options available for critical battery states.

Hi all. It is also possible to create system-wide settings using the dconf system. Here's what I did: "su" to root. "mkdir /etc/dconf" ; "cd /etc/dconf" ; "mkdir profile db db/site.d". Create the file "/etc/dconf/profile/user" with the following contents: user-db:user system-db:site Create a text fi...
