I've really enjoyed using this on Kubuntu, but I switched to Mint 18 a few days back and am experiencing exactly the same error. I uninstalled (including the PPA) and followed the Linux Mint advice at http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/kde-connec ... oid-linux/, but still getting the same error.

Seems my VPN provider changed the URL and I needed to put the address in without any http:// in the front. With that corrected, and MPPE activated, it connected fine. The error message was a bit cryptic though which is why i thought there was a problem with the Mint VPN service itself.

[SOLVED] VPN failed to start
I created the VPN under network settings without a problem but if I click to start it, it says 'failed because the VPN service failed to start'. It worked fine under Linux Mint Cinnamon Main Edition. I'm running LMDE Cinnamon 64-bit. CPU[-Quad core Intel Core i7-3770 (-HT-MCP-) clocked at 1600.000 M...
