Re: LM20C on a Dell 5593 (Ice Lake) laptop - intermittent GRUB failure [solved]

I'd been having the exact same problem with my Dell Inspiron 3793 for MONTHS, and this thread is a godsend!! I added the "rmmod tpm" line to GRUB using the procedure at https://askubuntu.com/questions/1290459/dell-laptop-inspiron-17-3793-brandnew-after-ubuntu-install-always-boot-failur an...

If you are looking for imaging / cloning software, Clonezilla is a "special purpose" Linux Distro designed for this specific purpose.

Re: LM20C on a Dell 5593 (Ice Lake) laptop - intermittent GRUB failure [solved]

Additional information: The malfunction seems to occur ONLY when I allow the GRUB countdown (to default choice) clock to expire and choose the first GRUB menu item for me. If I press <enter> before the countdown gets to 0 (to make a selection), the malfunction does not occur. <edit> It appears that...

Follow up: So, the problem happened this morning... I tried one of the solutions at the first ling and it worked >>> after first failure @ GRUB menu: press c GRUB> rmmod tpm <enter> Command failed. GRUB> <esc> (to get back to GRUB menu) Then just select a menu item and <enter> and the machine booted...

LM20C on an Ice Lake laptop (Dell 5593) - intermittent GRUB failure...

Thank You dorsetUK ! My problem is almost exactly the same as the problem described in your first link. The laptop in the link is a Dell 3593 - mine (and another poster in that thread) is a Dell 5593. I am running Mint 20 like another poster... It sounds like it is an error in GRUB 2.04 which is the...

Saw a new wrinkle this morning... Output looked like this >>> Error: Command failed. Error: Command failed. Error: Command failed. Error: Command failed. Error: You need to load the kernel first. Press any key to continue Failed to boot default and fallback entries. Press any key to continue ...and ...

LM20C on a Dell 5593 (Ice Lake) laptop - intermittent GRUB failure [solved]

I installed LM20C on a new laptop. The installation went off without a hitch. Likewise, updating was uneventful as well... about 2 weeks ago, an update included a new kernel. Rebooting the next day produced an interesting GRUB failure... I selected the first choice in the GRUB menu and the screen sh...

Re: Change my username on cloned system

@Reorx, I like this: 'The delete routine will ( probably ) ask ' :) Well, it did ask the last time I deleted a user... but that was several years and several versions ago... I would open the admin Users and Groups tool to see if I could find a way to rename the original admin user. FYI, t...

Re: Change my username on cloned system

Its nice that some people are happy with their equal usernames on different devices. Can we now get back to the last question? It looks i am almost there... I have never changed a users name so I am not completely sure it can be done safely and effectively. If I were trying to do this, I wou...

Re: Hibernation does not work

How much minimum partition size is good for ROOT and what is partition size recommended for HOME? Should I have swap partition or swap file if I want to use HIBERNATE? I try to make partitions at least 2x the data set size. The machine I am using to post this has a small-ish NVMe SSD (256GB) and is...

Re: Hibernation does not work

To successfully & reliably hibernate, I set up a Swap partition at least equal to RAM + 1 (or 2) gigabytes. So, if I were setting up your computer, I would create a Swap partition of 6 GB (to be safe). A Swap partition that is large enough is not a guarantee of success but a Swap partition that ...

Re: Change my username on cloned system

Why do you want a different admin name? I have 6 laptops with the same admin name. The computer name for each is unique however. My terminal prompt on this machine is reorx@freedom-20. I also have a user named reorx on computers named freedom-19 and freedom-18. The number in the computer's name is t...

Re: linux mint too slow

Mintmex, here: https://itsfoss.com/lightweight-linux-beginners/ is a list of some of the lightest Linux distributions out there today... From that list, I have run both Peppermint and LXLE on ageing hardware. Both worked well. LXLE is a real favorite - give it a try. I used to run LXLE on an old Wi...

Re: Missing menu item - Mint 20 Cinnamon

I believe that it is called Document Scan in Mint 20. I think that is coming from Ubuntu rather than being a deliberate Mint change... Thanx for the quick reply! YEP!!! Just did some more digging. The package name is in fact simple-scan in Synaptic but on the LM20C Mint Menu it is listed ...

Missing menu item - Mint 20 Cinnamon [solveDUH!]

I recently upgraded one of my laptops from LM19C to LM20C. I frequently use Simple Scan and am accustomed to finding it on the Mint Menu. I just went to use Simple Scan and was surprised that it wasn't on the menu. I thought that it was possible that LM20C might no longer includes Simple Scan as par...

No sorry, I don't know how to do this in Cinnamon. Maybe there's an equivalent to the TraditionalOK theme in the Cinnamon-themes ?
Couldn't find anything like it... :-(

Re: LM19 New install on 10th Gen i5 (Ice Lake) laptop - Software rendering mode [SOLVED]

LAST UPDATE: So something borked my LM19C installation... System locked up on shut down and wouldn't boot, login malfunctions (failures), etc... So my first approach was to try some troubleshooting to no avail. I then tried to reinstall the OS on / but leave /home alone to preserve my data... The da...
