Re: Linux Mint and laptops

I am planning a new install/transfer of my data to another computer that has 4 GB of memory, but I will upgrade it to 8; should I initially create a 9 GB swap when installing mint? I don't remember making the decision before but since I have a 8 GB swap now, it must have been default in the mint in...

Re: Linux Mint and laptops

3) If you want to be able to hibernate your laptop, use a SWAP size a little larger than your RAM size. On my 8GB laptop I use a 9GB SWAP. If you don't ever hibernate, you could use a smaller SWAP and use the disk space in / or /home. Don't increase your SWAP. In order to get more disk space availa...

Re: Linux Mint and laptops

Have 2.1 GB remaining, mint keeps bringing up warnings. I'm glad you pointed this out as I had no idea about it, I see that I can determine under "Processes" where the memory is being used. 2 GB to Windows 7 in my virtualbox which I can decrease and see what happens. My browser is using maybe close...

Re: Linux Mint and laptops

Attached. Could it have anything to do with the fact that I am running out of space on my HD? Have 8 GB memory which is the max for my system, but as the cost to replace the HD with a bigger one approaches the cost of getting another laptop, I might do that, since I do not know that my current lapt...

Re: Linux Mint and laptops

If your RAM usage is typically in the 80s and 90s, your performance would probably benefit from either running less tasks simultaneously OR installing more RAM. That's not necessarily true. The OP could have 32GB and still see that much RAM consumed due to the DE, say for example, caching large fil...

Re: Linux Mint and laptops

So in the picture that you posted, I just need to pay attention to the "swap" and not the "memory"? I looked at it periodically throughout the day and the memory was often in the 80s and above 90%, while the swap did not seem to go beyond 12-15%. Maybe you RAM needs are greater than mine!... How mu...

Re: Linux Mint and laptops

I'm either directly of indirectly responsible for Mint on about 7 or 8 Dell laptops . All function perfectly. The most recent purchase was in May this year. When I buy a new laptop - I look for a few features in general. 1) Intel CPU and on CPU graphics. I generally avoid dedicated GPUs. 2) I never...

Re: How do i find out what time a email was deleted in linux mint?

I need to find the exact time a email was deleted on thunderbird So the IT guys at a company don't know how to do this (or if it can be done) and they have someone ask on a user forum... hmmmm... You may be able to recover the email if it wasn't deleted from the trash folder. Even if it has, it isn...

Re: Professional Users on Mint?

I'm a "Professional" and I use Linux Mint every day - both at home and at my office and have been doing so since 2011. Does EVERYTHING I need and is very well behaved . I have little need for any other OS. I use windoze about once or twice a year to update the maps in my & my wife's GPS units. My wi...

Catweasel; Don't leave - if you do, the Mint forums will lose a valuable resource . If you don't think you can run with the young bucks, that's OK... but don't leave, just change job descriptions!... they're are taking applications for the Mint forum counsel of elders... That group of users that may...

Re: Want to delete second Mint 18.3 system

OK, so GRUB is typically in 2 parts. The first part is installed on the boot record of SDA. The second part resides (typically) on one of the partitions or drives with a distro on it. There is a pointer in the first part telling it where the rest of GRUB is. That pointer points to 1 disk and 1 parti...

Re: Want to delete second Mint 18.3 system

In multiple disk systems, I frequently end up wondering where GRUB resides. One easy way to determine is to disconnect SDC and see if the system will boot. If it does, then no part of GRUB resides on SDC and you can wipe it and use it for whatever you like. If the system does not boot, then at least...

85 year old answer - it's none of your business. The OP wants a VPN.
Of course it isn't! I was just trying to undo any potential tinfoil hat-ism!
Mine's always on.
Mine too but I've got the upgraded tinfoil 2.0 - it's auto regulating with a manual override...
