Re: opting out of surveillance capitalism (the "Big Other") New Year's resolution

When I dumped smart phone over a year ago, I learned quick that paper maps and hand written turn by turn directions were very inconvenient (especially just having moved to a big city). So I bought a garmin nuvi for gettin around, preferring garmin from years of using them while in military (persona...

Re: opting out of surveillance capitalism (the "Big Other") New Year's resolution

The solution is easy for me... I am changing nothing! My wife accuses me of having a tin-foil hat but I never opted in to the things that are intrusive on our privacy. I am slow to adopt new technology unless there is really a good/compelling reason to do so. I let the world at large be guinea pigs ...

Re: MS Going to Linux?

What was once old is now new again! ( Interesting (historical) Wikipedia article ) "Microsoft hopes that XENIX will become the preferred choice for software production and exchange", the company stated in 1981 . Microsoft referred to its own MS-DOS as its "single-user, single-tasking operating syste...

Re: second hard drive icon missing from desktop

Only mounted partitions or drives (other than the OS) appear on the desktop. When you click on the drive or partition in the file manager, you are telling the file manager to mount the partition or drive so you can use it. If you are logged in as an administrative user, the file manager will general...

Re: Mouse long left click to rename

The one feature that I miss from Windows is: one left click to highlight a file or folder name, and then rename. I have selected single click to open stuff... I point to an item and right click to rename... quick and easy. Linux's method is much too slow for bulk jobs. is there a way to adjust? Pet...

Re: Mint on a laptop?

I have used low end Dell laptops in the $200 - $400 price range as hosts for Linux Mint at least 10 times over the last 7 years with great success. I don't remember ever having any significant problems. I like laptops with Intel processors (typically i3 or i5 - any generation), no cutting edge techn...

You don't need an antivirus! LINK

I have never used an antivirus on Linux and in 7 years of "full time" use both at home and at work, I have never had any problems with any virus.

Re: Mint 19 Manual Install - Partition locations/sizes

OK, so you want to dedicate 12GB of the 120 GB SSD to "/". What are your plans for the remaining 108GB? I made the root bigger, so I have 90 GB free there. I'm open to suggestions. I would probably make "/" about 50 GB and leave /home in /. I would also put SWAP on the SSD as well because, if you a...

Re: Linux Mint and laptops

Ignore it. I seriously doubt anyone using linux on a laptop or desktop "could ever (within reason) need - 25 GB". RAM + 1GB is a good measure. Use that. Agreed x 2... The recommendation of 25 GB was supposed to be absurdly large! If he starts out with 4 GB of RAM, a 5 GB SWAP would probably work ju...
