Re: Kernel Security Update
Thanks to everyone for the clarification. However, even though the probability for a real attack may not be high, I definitely think THIS exploit is relevant for desktop users, and if Mint Update can't fix it (or potentially worse Kernel issues in the future), it is flawed and should be changed, esp...

Kernel Security Update
All major distros are receiving security upgrades for the Linux Kernel Zero Day Vulnerability CVE-2016-0728 (see http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-cve-2016-0728-0-day-local-privilege-escalation-vulnerability-fix/ for details) Now I'm a little worried because Mint Updater usually doesn't touch the K...

Re: Firefox 43 - recent update breaks extensions??
check if you have installed (outdated) extensions from the Mint repository, if yes uninstall and reinstall them directly from the Firefox Addon Page

Re: Spotify in Mint 17.3
Did a clean Mint install recently (coming back from Manjaro Cinnamon Edition),
but I think I ran the "old" 0.9 Spotify one or two times before switching over the Beta PPA,
so Spotify- wise it was an update

Re: Chromium calls home
It's not a bug, it's what Chromium does.
If you want a Google- free version of Chromium you have to use a fork, like e.g. https://iridiumbrowser.de/
It offers better security but also lacks some Google features (e.g. Sync / Signing in to Google)

Re: Pipelight or Silverlight difficulties
For me pipelight works best, but it will only work with the Linux version of Firefox (no Chrome/-ium or Firefox in wine) Install pipelight and then run the following commands: sudo pipelight-plugin --update pipelight-plugin --enable silverlight Then restart your browser, if it still doesn't work you...

Re: Spotify in Mint 17.3
I'm using the Spotify 1.x Beta version from the Spotify community blog, it doesn't have this issue and runs much smoother overall -
check https://community.spotify.com/t5/Spotif ... -p/1147084 for details.

Re: How should I program in Java in Mint?
Install Eclipse, it has everything you need for Java development. The version included with Mint is very old, but if you're just getting started it will take you a long way before you miss something. You can find a lot of Java tutorials on the web, e.g. http://eclipsetutorial.sourceforge.net/totalbe...

MintUpdate Kernel Update [solved]
When Mint Update does a Kernel update (like today in 17.1 RC), is the new Kernel loaded immediately at runtime, or will the new Kernel version only be active after a reboot? Just curious, I seem to remember a restart- warning from older versions of Mint ...
Thanks, Axel
Thanks, Axel

Re: Ubuntu lost it? Some say Canonical has lost it way.
Ubuntu has lost its way completely, IMHO, even if they become successful in the phone market (which I don't believe) the result will be yet another proprietary Linux- based OS, just like Android. Besides I don't like Mark Shuttleworth's "I'm a billionaire, I do what I want" attitude ... he...

Re: Firefox resetting itself
explicity set write permissions for ~/.mozilla (recursive !!), that did it for me - had a similar issue once when I backuped my settings and copied them back, somehow some stuff was readonly so FF forgot all the settings every time

Chrome. It's fast, widely supported around the web (unlike Opera) and it's the only way to get an up to date flashplayer on Linux.
