Re: How to use Workspaces

when I switch workspaces I want to see just some workspaces-specific apps in my app panel. That is exactly what I see. I posted the pic here: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p=2453190#p2453190 If you don't see that I fully understand why you don't want to use it, although I could probabl...

Re: Auto mounting a USB drive – 2 GUI methods – which is better?

I don't understand why connecting a USB connected drive (HDD, SSD, or flash drive) to a running computer would be a problem. I've never had a problem when doing that over the decades I've been doing it. An HDD has moving parts. If you set a 3.5" HDD on the table while using it it would make a ...

I use the Brave Browser. It has most of the protections already in place. I just don't participate in their buggy-as-a-flophouse-bed BAT program.

Re: How to stop workspace change by mouse scroll

Hello all, I have mint 20.3 XFCE I use workspace switching - and my preferred method for switching to a different workspace is to click on one of the two workspaces located on the lower panel bar. However, there is obviously a default setting in which workspace will also be switched when the mouse ...

Re: How to use Workspaces

Meanwhile collapsing apps is the only meaningful way to keep my desktop organized and neat. Hard disagree, I think workspaces are wonderful for organization (and they existed in Linux since the 1990s), but of course to each their own. I think the current design is great; I hope they don't change it...

Re: Auto mounting a USB drive – 2 GUI methods – which is better?

having the drive connected prior to booting up, causes the boot time to be excessive. I have found from doing it many times, that it is far more preferable to just boot up normally, and then when the Desktop has been reached, Plug in the USB drive. It seems to take a much shorter time period for th...

Re: NAS drive HDDs

Hiyall, I just created my 10 year old NAS drive as a network backup. It contains 6x 2Tb HDDs in a RAID10 setup. (mirrored 6Tb). Considering their age, one or more HDDs are like to fail sooner rather than later. My question; is it necessary to replace the drive with one exactly the same size or coul...

Re: Can't change screen brightness - Lenovo IdeaPad - Cinnamon 21.3

If all else fails, you might want to try the Brightness and gamma applet. It has worked for me on a machine with an NVIDIA (pardon my profanity) card and one with an AMD card. I have mine set so only the slider for brightness shows when I click on the applet's icon. These are the settings I used. se...

Re: Audioquest DragonFly Cobalt

Did you ever get that low frequency tone sorted out? A little while ago, after six years of use, my little Dragonfly Red DAC lost its right channel. At first, I thought my right speaker had gone bad. After fiddling with connections, switching it off and on, "talking" to it, etc., to furthe...

Re: OCD and Linux Mint

That is too funny  One can get OCD about backing up. I try to keep it reasonable, but I sure do have quite a few copies and they aren't all in one place. I also make and maintain quite a few backups for each drive in my computers. Granted, it's not to satisfy any OCD tendencies (it's all about...

Re: New HP laptop, will LM install void warranty?

I always replace the original SSD in case I have to revert to the original installation. If there is more than one drive in the machine and I have to send the machine back for warranty repair, I'll remove all the drives and replace them with the original drives.

Notes to altair4's comments. I always add user to the fstab options, without it only root can mount/unmount. If you mount in /media it will show in the devices pane in nemo as DATA (remember linux is case sensitive). If you don't want it to show in the devices pane, mount it in /mnt . You have to e...

Re: CPUs some better than others

Agreed, the new Intel chips are reportedly blowtorches, and must be water cooled. My current desktop on the Windows machine is a Ryzen 1700 at 65 watts TDP, and it works just great. AMD's latest AM5 CPU's are regular blast furnaces (and AMD claims they can run at 95°C all the time; I don't buy it) ...

Re: Suspend /Hibernate - Why do people use it?

In the case of Hibernate, one use would be when using a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply), if the power goes out while the computer is running but is not attended at the time, some UPSes have the ability to safely shut down the computer for you. They do that by Hibernating the computer which preven...
