Can't boot into GRUB

I just want to boot into GRUB one time to run Memtest. I've read multiple places that all you do is press shift or esc on the keyboard while booting up, but it's not doing anything for me. I've tried tapping the keys and holding down and it makes no difference. I'm specifically using the left shift ...

Disks utility showing SSD at 100° C / 212° F

I installed an SSD last week and Linux Mint 19.3 is showing the temperature as 100° C / 212° F which is clearly off in the Disks Utility (Gnome Disks). If I type hddtemp in the terminal, it shows it as 33° C which while much more reasonable, I don't think is right either, as this is just when I firs...

Re: Brother DCP 7020 scanner not working on Linux Mint

Not to deviate off topic too much, but I noticed there are Brother printer drivers in the Software Manager. Are the drivers on the Brother website typically newer?

Re: Memory for Mint 19.3, upgrade to 8GB worth it?

Kadaitcha Man , I got plenty of helpful and friendly responses from other members on my post. My question, about the benefits of upgrading from 4GB to 8GB as it pertains to Linux Mint was simple enough, and was answered and I learned even more in the process. When I am trying to figure out what arc...

Re: Memory for Mint 19.3, upgrade to 8GB worth it?

My main Mint machine is ten years old. Not quite a dinosaur but no spring chicken. Never had any problems running any version of Mint with 4 GB RAM. (My main system is Mate, but I have the others in test boxes.) Ended up upgrading to 8 GB to accommodate VirtualBox, where as a practical matter you s...

Scientific Wild-Ass Guess
For some reason I thought you were referring to an application in Linux, I am very well aware of that SWAG as we use it a lot where I work. :D

The only TimeShift settings I modified was changing the Home and Root directory from "Exclude All" to "Include Hidden."

Re: Memory for Mint 19.3, upgrade to 8GB worth it?

My question is regarding RAM, currently it has 4GB DDR2 RAM and have been considering replacing the two 2GB sticks with two 4GB DDR2 RAM sticks to double its memory to 8GB. The question is whether the machine supports more than 4 GB of memory. Information at: https://thinkpads.com/t61/ Contrasts wi...

My question is regarding RAM, currently it has 4GB DDR2 RAM and have been considering replacing the two 2GB sticks with two 4GB DDR2 RAM sticks to double its memory to 8GB. Will I see a real difference in performance, and if so in what ways? It'll only matter if your current setup is swapping (= oc...

Re: Memory for Mint 19.3, upgrade to 8GB worth it?

Being new to Linux, I am curious to understand how it utilizes RAM, especially compared to Windows. And when RAM is added, where would one expect to see change, whether it is perceived or not. It's ok to ask in these forums, but don't expect a definitive answer. For that type of thing, your best co...

Re: Memory for Mint 19.3, upgrade to 8GB worth it?

Will I see a real difference in performance... That question is unanswerable because you're actually asking people to measure something over against your personal ability to perceive change, which is impossible. It is well known that adding more RAM is always beneficial to performance, especially o...

Memory for Mint 19.3, upgrade to 8GB worth it?

I have a 12-year old ThinkPad T61 that originally came with the horrid Windows Vista which I upgraded to Windows 7 as soon as it came out. With the Windows 7 EOL this past January, I decided to make my jump into the world of Linux by installing Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon 64-bit after reading about how...

Re: Timeshift crashes during start of Restore

Pardon, but what is SWAG?

I actually ended up with a fresh install as I decided to replace the HDD with an SSD, so I've moved on.

Thanks for the feedback, hopefully others if they run into this issue could come to a resolution and share what they did.

Re: [Solved] Mint 19.3 - Increadibly slow at times

I'm reinstalling Mint on the HDD, just to see if the old problem resurfaces. I'll do a serious install when I get the SSD. Thanks for the tip with WDIDLE3. I'll be looking into it. I just replaced my HDD with an SSD yesterday on an old 12-year old laptop, I highly recommend it, it will breath new l...

[SOLVED] Connected devices not appearing on systems tray

I installed Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon 64-bit, back in January having migrated from Windows 7. Yesterday I took out the hard drive and replaced it with a solid state drive and decided to do a fresh install instead of cloning it on. One thing I have noticed is I do not get the connected drives on the s...
