Re: Speed, Wow: Mint 19.3 Cinnamon vs Ubuntu Mate 19.10

Most all of the advertised speed tweaks in newer versions of Ubuntu are for Ubuntu main. And they are for GNOME Shell. They will have no effect with regards to Mate performance. If the version number on that OpenGL line is 3.0 or higher, it's probably going to do OK with Cinnamon. If it's 2.0 or hi...

Re: When Will You Fix The Display Problems??

When Will You Fix The Display Problems?? When will you post a support question type post in an appropriate forum here? Each of your issues can be handled in a separate question on the appropriate forum. That's the " Graphics Cards & Monitors " forum for the questions/issues you've mentioned. You sh...

Re: Mystery Password

Racer-X: Using mount -t ext4 did show as "rw". Exploring the "home" directory, I discovered that everything's ownership had been changed to "root". Well, that might (or might not) explain why that user won't open. I tried chown -hR x /x (where x is the username and the directory), but it would not ...

Re: Easy to Compile in Mint?

Mint Tricia is based on Ubuntu 18.04. The steps should be the same. Generally, to build anything from source, you need to have the "build-essential" package installed. You can install that from the software manager, or do sudo apt install build-essential from the command line. If it's already instal...

Re: how keep swap on

You're using a swapfile now, as shown on the last line of your /etc/fstab and on your cat /proc/swaps.

If you have a swap partition set up and you want to use it, I'll need the output from lsblk -f to give you the entry for /etc/fstab to use the swap partition.

Re: New explorer in Linux Land

I'm about to try out all the different desktops in Mint, in live sessions, to see which I like best. No doubt I'll be on here asking loads of questions before I commit to a proper install, but feeling excited to be going on a new journey at 71. Knowing what hardware you have would be helpful to any...

Re: Speed, Wow: Mint 19.3 Cinnamon vs Ubuntu Mate 19.10

Am I missing anything else to consider? Got any tips on bettering performance? Cinnamon especially also requires and benefits from more modern GPUs. Look at inxi -Gxz and check the last line that starts "OpenGL:" $ inxi -Gxz Graphics: Device-1: Intel Mobile 945GSE Express Integrated Graphics vendor...

Re: Like Opera But It Constantly Freezes! Why?

I'm not entirely certain, but you're running an unsupported (past EOL) kernel there. On hardware that old, I'd stick with the LTS kernel (4.15) and the LTS xserver packages. That may clear up the issues for you. With that Nvidia chipset, you might have issues with the 5.3 kernel, especially if you i...

Re: New explorer in Linux Land

Hello and welcome! I don't think the Linux Shop supports Mint financially... but you can always do that later, if you like, by donating directly. Feel free to ask questions, that's what we're here for! Is there a place on the linuxmint.com home page to buy a USB drive with mint ISO(s) on it ready t...

Re: Installation of Linux Mint with LUKS alongside a existing Ubuntu installation,is that possible?

There's an outline for it here , but it assumes that you already have the LVM setup in the LUKS container. That's a good start for how to do what is being asked about here. That procedure installs GRUB, which should be installed into the EFI System Partition for UEFI setups. I would probably do tha...

Re: Installation of Linux Mint with LUKS alongside a existing Ubuntu installation,is that possible?

Is it possible? I always say anything is possible with enough time, talent and treasure. What you are describing can be set up. It might not be the most stable setup, and updates to one system could cripple/disable the other system. It's especially likely that any update that results in a call to up...

Re: Why is not Linux Mint using the latest version of the kernel?

So, when will a fixed release appear that uses at least 5.5? Mint 20, in the summer. And Ubuntu 20.04, at the end of April: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FocalFossa/ReleaseSchedule The Focal daily updates are still on 5.4, and I haven't seen anything that leads me to believe that there are plans to push ...

Re: Problems after kernel update

When did it last work? And were you working properly under Linux Mint 19.2? And now broken under 19.3 after upgrading? Output from inxi -Fxxz would help, and please, press the "</>" button above the editor and put your output from the commands between the "code" and "/code" tags. It makes it much ea...

Re: Mystery Password

Did You set the password from the "Advanced Options -> Recovery mode"? The one thing with that is you have to make certain that the / file system is mounted read/write mode. Otherwise it won't updated the password. I always double check with "mount -t ext4" after doing the remount. If it says "ro", ...

Re: kernel panic on shutdown Mint 19.3

For the last week or so when I have been shutting down the system I get the message regarding "kernel panic - not syncing" I am using the default kernel 4.15.0.76 - generic and before last week there was no problem. System boots and runs fine. What update could have caused this ? Or is it something...

Re: Slow issues on mint

Open a terminal window (Ctrl-alt-T is a keyboard shortcut to do that), and enter the command inxi -Fxxz.

Highlight all of the output from that and paste into your reply between "code" and "/code" tags. Use the "</>" button to insert the tags, and paste your inxi output between the two tags.

Re: I had to rollback to kernel 4.15 due to serious issues with 5.3

Hi, As you can see from the title, I had to roll back to kernel 4.15 as of today and it's working more than fine with me. Before that I was on the 5.0 but since its life will end this month I had to sacrifice and roll back now to 4.15. Needless to say that the 5.3 kernel was horrible and I couldn't...

Re: Linux Mint does not see Digital Media Card

Any chance this is going to screw-up this machine. Anything that implies -- kernel -- scares the ____ out of me. I can easily live without the SD card, but I depend on this machine. It shouldn't mess anything up with the kernel. However, you're running a kernel that's only been in general release f...

Re: Linux Mint does not see Digital Media Card

You have the RealTek USB card reader in that machine. Do you have linux-modules-extra installed for your kernel? Try sudo apt install linux-modules-extra-`uname -r` from a terminal window. If it installs something, reboot and see if it finds the SD Card when you have one in the slot. If it tells you...

Re: Partitioning not doing what I want

If I understand your opening post, you had a previous installation of Linux that used your second drive as the /home. Is that correct? If you want that mounted as /home now, open your fstab in an editor (from a terminal window, enter xed admin:///etc/fstab and enter your password when it asks twice)...
