Re: Ubuntu 9.10 installed and running well

Actually, since I fixed the problem with Karmic and the disappearing fonts in OpenOffice.org, the problem reappeared, and after a careful search of the Ubuntu forum, I haven't turned up that anyone has experienced this same problem. So I uninstalled Karmic from that partition, because I am rather un...

Re: Ubuntu 9.10 installed and running well

Yeah, I'm still a Mint Freak. I only play around with Ubuntu as part of my 'Linux education.' This is a bit of a change for me. Not only that I get to see many of the same features that Mint uses in a slightly different format, i.e., Ubuntu's implementation of Gnome (to state the obvious), but in my...

Re: Mint Glitches...

Yeah, that works. Stream of consciousness. I just re-read the OP's o.p. and it almost made sense with me thinking, 'stream of consciousness, stream of consciousness.' But, Dr. Hu, are you suggesting we create a 'stream of consciousness' section for the forums? It could be very entertaining, or it co...

Re: Suggest Software for Helena

My wife thinks that Mint ought to include the Gimpshop instead of Gimp. She finds the Gimp too different from that other program she is used to.

http://www.gimpshop.com/index.shtml

It is the one bit of unhappiness she is experiencing with Gloria, and it has kept Vista on her laptop.

Re: how to add the mint reppositores to 9.10

I installed 9.10 on a separate partition, and I'm playing with it, but I'm still a Minter. (I really only did it because I was curious about Helena! I will be one of the first to try the RC when it comes out, even though I said I would not change right away, I'm changing my mind about that.) As a bo...

Re: THE MINT CAFE GANG

I'm going to be in trouble after my birthday, since my parents are no longer available for comment. I do look young for my age, so if I'm quiet, maybe no one will ask if I have permission to be here. Then again, since I work in a community of seniors, I could find someone to stand in as a parent, if...

Re: Where can I download the daily build from?

True, that is one difference between the Mint distro and the Ubuntu one on which it is based, Clem has decided not to release anything until the RC: no alpha, and no beta. I was trying to find the Alpha for Helena, and I stumbled across that bit of information... Of course, you are free to add anyth...

Re: THE MINT CAFE GANG

I've been thinking about it, and whoever it was that first said, "Life begins at 50" probably said, "Life begins at 40" ten or eleven years before that.

LIfe begins...now.

Re: Fan stays on

I love compressed air! It's amazing what comes out of places you couldn't even see. As for me, I found the fan runs a lot less in Linux than it did running Windows on this desktop. I only hear it when I play videos, or when I first boot into the Ubuntu partition. Even booting into Mint 7 doesn't eve...

Re: Mint is still the best

+1

I'm playing with Puppy, Slackware, and even Ubuntu, but that's just part of my 'education' in Linux.

Mint is still home, and I haven't found anything to compare with its ease of use. It is still the number one distro I recommend to people.

Re: Next LTS edition

Yup. I've tried the LTS's in all their versions, and I still am using the Main Edition of Gloria as my main OS. Gloria is much faster than Elissa, even compared to the lighter Xfce edition. When Helena, or Mint 8, is released, you might dip your toe in by downloading or purchasing a CD and running i...

Ubuntu 9.10 installed and running well

I did one of those impulsive leaps I sometimes do and installed Ubuntu 'Karmic' on a separate partition of my desktop. I downloaded it from the Tuxdistro torrent site. I waited a day after the release date to download it, since the release day showed that a multitude of people were trying to get it ...

Re: 5 Ways the Linux Desktop shoots itself in the foot

Forgive me for going off on a tangent, but I'm lost in the math. OP (AK Dave) says the blogger's five ways are really one, and, then says he'll split it out into three parts. So, next I see two points covered at once, and then the third one pops up. Fine, until I come upon points four and five. :sho...

Re: HML - the future of Linux?

Personally, I think I will make my own distribution. I could name it after me, but that wouldn't be good marketing, since no one knows who I am. I don't think they care who I am, either.

So, I will call it Ubun3: One better.

Re: Xsplash in Mint 8

I would just like to see a smaller logo displaying at boot with a thinner progress bar. The logo in the last release just seemed too large to me. I just want to see Mint have the most professional look possible. +1 I would dare to say that the Mint logo should be smaller and less "in your face" in ...
