Re: System requirements for Xfce

I really appreciate the recommendations! Antix looks promising. I apologize for not replying for several days, but right now I'm caring for two very sick parents. My father is terminally ill and my mother is currently in the hospital also very sick. Resurrecting an ancient computer took a back seat ...

System requirements for Xfce

Hey everybody, I have not used Linux in quite some time. However... I am now in possession of an ancient Dell Dimension 8200 system. It features a 1.7 GHz Pentium 4 CPU (which I assume is 32-bit only), 512 MB of RAM, an Nvidia GeForce 5200 video card, and I believe a 160 GB hard drive. Also a 56k mo...

Mint on a Really BIG screen!

Hey everybody, I posted here not too long ago, after I installed Mint on a very old laptop that has a Core 2 Duo CPU. I ended up not doing anything with it. Just too old and too slow to be useful anymore, and for some reason that thing beeps loudly several times at every boot. So... when Amazon had ...

Greetings from Brenham, TX!

Hey everybody, I haven't been around here in a while. I use and like Windows 10 on my main computer, which is an older i7-3930k system. It's five years old, but hey, it does what I need it to do. :) The only reason I don't use Mint on my main system is 1) Secure Boot, which I don't know how to deal ...

How do I activate Linux?

Hey everybody,

I have successfully installed Mint 18 Cinnamon on my older laptop, but I can't figure out how to activate it! Where do I find the activation code and how do I enter it? What features does it unlock, and how long can I use Mint without activating it?

Thanks,

Jeff

Re: Greetings from Central Texas! :)

Thanks for the warm welcome back, everybody! And, Crewp, yes 2009 does seem like ages ago! :) I started out using Mint 7, which was awesome at the time. And then upgraded to Mint 9, which was also very good. Mint 10 ROCKED, but soon after that I bought those Bose speakers and went back to the Window...

Greetings from Central Texas! :)

Hey everybody, I took a long break from Linux because back in 2012 I bought some awesome Bose Companion 5 speakers and found that I couldn't get them working in Linux, despite trying several fixes that worked for others. So.. it was back to the Windows world, and I'm happily using Windows 10 on my m...

Re: Shall I install 17.3 or wait for 18?

I've tried all of those fixes at one time or another, and they don't work for me... Windows just works, with all of my hardware, with zero issues. And I just don't have the patience to deal with this or other Linux issues...

Re: Shall I install 17.3 or wait for 18?

Well... I booted the Mint 18 Beta DVD, and the only way I could get video was to boot into Compatibility Mode. And... my awesome Bose Companion 5 speakers are still not supported. They weren't detected at all... and that is most definitely a deal-killer. Thanks for the help here, everybody, but I gu...

Re: Shall I install 17.3 or wait for 18?

My UEFI doesn't have the option to disable Secure Boot. There are just two options - Windows UEFI boot or "other OS", but that option appears to be for older Windows versions. The option to disable Secure Boot is grayed out and isn't available. Shall I choose "other OS" and hope for the best or will...

Shall I install 17.3 or wait for 18?

Hey everybody, I have only posted here one time over the last four years or so. I had to leave the Linux world when I bought my awesome Bose Companion 5 speakers. They were not compatible with Linux back in 2012. I tried every available fix I could find, and nothing worked that would survive a reboo...

Will Linux work on my system?

Hey everybody, I haven't posted here in a long time. I used Linux Mint several years ago and loved it. But, back in 2012 I bought some awesome Bose Companion 5 speakers. I found out after the $400 purchase that these speakers don't work in Linux. And that was a deal-killer, so I went back to the Win...

Re: Bose Companion 5 speakers not working

It should work out of the box on any supported release of Linux Mint. Check the Sound settings once you connected the USB and you should see Bose listed on the Output tab. Select it and done. Does that not work for you? No, it doesn't and none of the fixes posted online work for me either. Or, they...

Bose Companion 5 speakers not working

Hey everybody, I have posted about this issue in the past and not gotten any help, so obviously I'm hoping for a different outcome this time around. :) I'll be honest that I do not have Mint installed at this time, but I do remain interested in the OS. The reason is because my Bose Companion 5 USB s...

Re: Bose USB speakers take a long time to start working

This issue is actually NOT solved. I am still researching this on my own and have found this topic: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=123702&p=680390&hilit=pulse+audio&sid=fbd9570e76058ad84cca498b51e4bc7e#p680390 Also, I have set the sound to work through ALSA instead of Pulse Audio. ...

Re: Bose USB speakers take a long time to start working

I found the fix for this issue here:

http://www.josephcrawford.com/2010/09/b ... nd-ubuntu/

But... choose Pulse Audio instead of ALSA.
