Re: I'm all in! Well, at least $85 in a 15 year old HP Laptop
Got 19.3 Cinnamon running in dual boot (Windows XP/Cinnamon) on a 15 year old HP Laptop. Mostly just to see what it would be like. So far, it's just enough of a pain in the ass to get my attention. So, I'm dumping $85 into some RAM and a SSD to help speed it up a bit. The RAM will up it from 333mHZ...

Re: why thunderbird, a local mail program, is installed by default?
1) Unified Inbox for multiple email accounts (1 Gmail + 1 from ISP) 2) Custom mail folders on ISP Email Account usable in Thunderbird 3) Google Calendar sync 4) Google Contacts sync I’m sure I could get away with not using it but the web based email clients for both my ISP and Google don’t enable al...

Re: I'm all in! Well, at least $85 in a 15 year old HP Laptop
I’ve got a ide/pata machine (IBM ThinkPad G40) with similar resources (3 GHz P4, 2GB RAM). Runs LM 19.3 XFCE 32 bit respectably well. Almost the same as my HP Pavilion ZD7249. 3 GHz P4, soon to be 2GB RAM. I probably should have chosen something thinner than Cinnamon as it is pretty slow with 1.25G...

Yeah the battery is pretty much toast but this a a really heavy (like 8-9 lb) 17" screen laptop that will have a full-time plugged-in life in a new space where it will serve as a desktop replacement. As far as PATA SSD's, I was pretty surprised that they're still out there available.

Re: Did not drink the kool-aid--only sniffed at it
Yeah, I just went through this on my wife's home Win 10 Pro desktop. Had to upgrade it from 8.0 to 8.1 first, which was a bigger pain than the upgrade from 8.1 to 10. After the upgrade, every time you run Windows Update and go through 156 updates and reboot, you figure you can go back into Windows U...

Re: Who would do this to their Cinnamon desktop?
I think it's pretty funny. And creative. Kind of like the motorcycle world I've been in where people modify Ducati Monster motorcycles. I may not really like the customizations that somebody does to their bike, but I respect their right to do it, and their creativity!

Re: Linux not shutting down
My new installation of 19.3 Cinnamon was shutting down properly but now it is hanging during shutdown with a flashing cursor in upper left of black screen. I did go through the suggestions in the "Easy Linux Tips Project: ..." as well as the one to make your Linux Mint run faster, but not ...

Linux Newbie - First Install Done!
Just installed 19.3 Cinnamon on a really old HP Laptop in dual boot with Windows XP (yes, XP!). Having had corporate IT responsibility since the mid-80's with MS-DOS, Windows, DEC VMS (OpenVMS), Mac OS/X, Windows Servers ..., I felt like it wouldn't be a big deal to try it out. Ran into a few snafus...
