Re: Oracle VirtualBox black screen with blinking cursor on boot

see if it is a display problem by getting into a console - it takes a few seconds for the console to appear. right-ctrl+insert+f3 (f2 or f4) if it give you a login prompt then a library or symbolic link is missing. I had a missing symbolic link on one of my virtual machines that left a black screen ...

Re: Cannot connect to open port

The ports are only opened on your PC they have to be 0.0.0.0 not 127.0.0.1 to be opened on the network. Like this: tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:5938 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN - tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:22 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN - tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:631 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN -

Re: COVID-19 "Infects" COBOL (The Computer Language)

COBOL is a efficient language unlike Java and was designed when computers were rarely more than 32K in size. COBOL compilers had to be written in assembler for the machine it was going to run on. Every COBOL had to be certified to meet a requirement to produce the same result regardless of computer ...

Re: Screensaver fades to black...but no screensver?

Does that mean it would NEVER black screen, i,e, even if I have the screen set to turn off after, say, 30 mins? It tells the hardware not to after 5 minutes It still allows the screensaver to blank the screen man xset for more details - I just don't like the screen going blank before the screensave...

/usr/bin/xset 0 0
/usr/bin/xset -dpms

that will tell the hardware not to black screen

Re: systemd news

It appears that they want to remove /etc/passwd /etc/groups /etc/shadow and move most of /etc to /usr/etc.
I bet that breaks a lot of software installs that access those systems.
Good thing it is optional.
Change for the sake of change is not always progress.

Re: nm-applet present but clicking it does nothing

I have notice 2 weird thing with MATE 1.24
Sometimes the Desktop icons disappear. If you sudo killall caja in a terminal - they reappear.
Sometimes the Panel applets stop working. If you mate-panel --replace 2>/dev/null & in a terminal - they start working again.

Re: Laptop boot lid closed

Many laptops have more than one lid sensor - My dell 7470 had the same issue - no boot when lid closed - the fix: this is how to ignore it - change the logind.conf file in /etc/systemd and change the #HandleLidSwitch to the line in my file. user@Laptop:/etc/systemd> cat logind.conf # This file is pa...

the other way install X11vnc and configure a password for it. enable sshd and open a port to your computer in the firewall to sshd (change port from 22 to a number above 2000 for security or redirect a high port in the router to port 22 on your computer). have the students ssh into your computer and...

Re: A Plead for Linux to Help Elderly & Small Business during Coronavirus

You can use vnc before login - Ubuntu Forum has a couple of choices if sshd is set up you can login with ssh and open port 5900 to connect your vnc - that is secure - you don't want port 5900 open on the internet. you should change sshd port from 22 to some large number like 12345 or 23232. the seco...

Re: A Plead for Linux to Help Elderly & Small Business during Coronavirus

My father was 88 years old - he could use Firefox and E-mail (in Firefox - Gmail). Everything else was out of his ability. you have 2 ways to take remote control of her computer. in Linux 1. Enable SSHd on a port other than 22 and ssh into the remote computer and VNC into it. 2. Install Teamviewer a...

Re: Laptop suspends even though it's set to do nothing when screen closed(SSH freeze)

there is an option in /etc/systemd/logind.conf change the line to look like the red one - it seems that many Dell laptops need that to be changed. # This file is part of systemd. # # systemd is free software; you can redistribute it and/or modify it # under the terms of the GNU Lesser General Public...

Re: Laptop loonies

I think that model only goes to 8 GB of DDR3 ram - that is only about $32 today - 2 - 4gb modules. It is likely that the USB port you plugged into may be non-powered - a lot of Compaq laptops have fuses for every port and I have seen a lot of blown fuses. It is not worth the cost to try to replace t...

you don't - it is the hard drive attached to the controller with the vmdk file Virtualbox cannot boot from the USB ever. you make the drive that the USB is plugged into (on my machine it is /dev/sdc1 is the bootable installed USB) If you want to install you just put the iso image into the cd drive. ...

you have to make a VMDK file with this command and put usb.vmdk in the storage controller as the hard disk. the path is /dev/sdb or /dev/sdc use disk command to see what it is.

VBoxManage internalcommands createrawvmdk -filename usb.vmdk -rawdisk "path_to_usb"

Re: Virtualbox and pen drives

you have to build a VMDK file that points to the pen drive for Virtualbox to see it and you have to add it to the VBox disk controller. the VirtualBox manual shows you how to use VBoxManage to create a USB virtual file - you will have to know what drive like /dev/sdb or /dev/sdc what the drive lette...

Re: Which laser printer has drivers for Linux

Mint doesn't have drivers for any of them!
It is more likely that the printer drivers are copyrighted and cannot be distributed with Linux - that is why you have to get them from the printer makers website.
