Re: Update Manager: No Space Left

Found the issue. While all those cleaning things were nice, the real culprit was that at some point several months ago, Timeshift decided to put a snapshot (and a bit more) in my /boot directory. This is not where current Timeshift snapshots are going, but those ones from last July did take up about...

[SOLVED] Update Manager: No Space Left

Running Linux Mint 21.3. [I think the clean install was 21.2 but then I updated in place for 21.3.] ~ 10 yr old Laptop has 1TB HDD and 8GB RAM. Using full disk encryption For awhile I've been getting errors on Update Manager. From my scribbled notes, it was something like Subprocess /usr/bin/ dpkg r...

Re: SOLVED: Putting music on a flash drive for dummies?

Yes, the order will seem messed up compared to your computer etc., where you might have your music sorted alphabetically by artist. to get your files sorted as on your computer you might want to try this in a terminal 1. df to find what device your flash drive is. Suppose it's /dev/sdb1 2. umount /d...

Re: Putting music on a flash drive for dummies?

I just use Rhythmbox, which I think is part of the standard install. I have noticed that I have to click on the CD drive (in a file manager window) after the CD has been inserted, for Rhythmbox to recognize that one has been put in. And with an internet connection it'll automatically match the CD to...

Re: Optical drive recommendation

Thank you for that detailed reply! I rarely burn CDs or DVDs any longer. Across multiple types and generations of OS and optical drives, I always found it to be a crapshoot in terms of the results - either success or yet another beverage coaster. :D Re-writable ones were even more of a longshot for ...

Optical drive recommendation

Hi, It appears my desktop tower's (5.25"?) optical drive is failing, or has failed. After only 13+ years! Actually it gets pretty infrequent use, but one of those uses right now is re-ripping my CD library to a higher bitrate and hope that my car stereo's USB flash input can read it (separate t...

Re: Puddletag and Hondas

thanks. I may try that, especially for MP3s that would be hard to re-rip (such as those I made from about a couple dozen vinyl records and cassette tapes I still have). Back in 2012, I recorded them through a receiver with a DAC plugged into my computer, using Audacity in Windows 7, and manually spl...

Re: Puddletag and Hondas

I think this bit from the docs may explain things: https://docs.puddletag.net/source/id3.html#paired-frames Thank you much for your quick reply - but I do not understand what role paired frames may have in my situation. I looked at the tags on my files and don't see any of those. Can you elaborate ...

Puddletag and Hondas

tl;dr: For an MP3 song file, how do you change "ID3 version" in puddletag from "ID3" to "MP3" ? One thing that I really love to be able to do with a PC is to synchronize audio to a flash drive (FAT32 format) and play it in my car stereo via the USB input as a media devi...

No restart with FDE

Using Mint 21.2 x86_64 on an old Dell XPS tower (AMD processor). also, xfce 4.18, kernel 5.15.0-88-generic using full disk encryption. "Restart" from GUI logout menu only shuts down, does not restart. But not a complete shutdown - power button is still illuminated (orange/yellow, I think, ...

Re: Jumpy Cursor Syndrome (JCS)

Independent datapoint (well I do use LM 21.2) - I've been dealing with a very jumpy mouse too. It was a Logitech M100. Occasionally it registers phantom double-clicks in Thunar file manager (when no click occurred, or a single click), and in Claws email it has this strange habit of jumping from one ...

Re: ungoogled-chromium no longer supports LM-20.3 ? (`GLIBC' not found)

Chromium from the repository works great on LM 20.3. One of the reasons for switching from Chromium to ungoogled is a huge banner in the app drawer, in incognito mode. By any chance is this related to the large banner that appears when you first start Software Manager (in LM 21.2 Xfce)? It looks li...

Re: Repair or replace? [SOLVED]

update: Yesterday I bought a new HDD at Micro Center, and have replaced the failing drive and reinstalled Linux Mint. I used an external SSD for file transfer. pulled a Brand New LogiTech M510 out of the plastic wrap, I always keep two spares in the office. that resolved the problem, apparently the Left Clicker is having bad Contact Issues.... pulled the battery, and put it up on the shelf, labeled, flaky left clicker. maybe this thread will help someone ...

you can't order stuff online and have it delivered to your door? ; because that surely sounds much better than a 200 mile round trip. I agree! Re: Repair or replace?

Thank you for your reply! I am puzzled at this common thought that HDDs are slow. Maybe I have more patience than my spouse thinks I do. Seriously though, I do notice when things go slow, and that just isn't my experience with my HDDs. Oh, with one big exception, and this ties into your first part. ...

Repair or replace? [SOLVED]

Last week the HDD in my venerable desktop tower PC started throwing up errors. It had happened once before, a couple years back, but the errors were fixable. Not so this time, it appeared. I'd like to poll the readers here to see if, given the context of things, would they recommend repair or replac...

Re: Hard disk has uncorrectable errors

This is kind of interesting ... I had the same kind of errors thrown up on the same day. I've been on LM for 3.5 yrs. The drive was nearly 13 yrs old. Originally windows, then dual boot, then LM only.

Re: Firefox 112.0 (Completed)

FWIW I'm also getting that same rendering behavior often in Firefox. Currently running 112.0.2, but it probably occurred a bit earlier too. Very annoying. I'm using an Acer 1920x1080 monitor, not a television, and the zoom is 100%. Mint-Y-Dark theme. LM 21.1, xfce 4.16. There are 3 settings in about...
