Re: Can't boot Windows without the install USB plugged in

I've tried a couple software solutions, partition managers that have a repair MBR tool, one of them changed the startup message from grub rescue to no boot media found, but that's it. I haven't tried running those commands from within Windows, I did it from the CMD in the Repair Installation section...

Can't boot Windows without the install USB plugged in

I have had Linux Mint 17.3 installed for a few years, with Windows 10 installed on a second HDD. Recently, I wanted to do a clean install of the latest version of Mint and Windows 10, so I ran the Windows 10 setup from a Live USB and formatted all partitions that were previously Mint, and installed ...

Re: Lightweight Linux distros

I guess it depends on how one defines "old" hardware. I just installed LM 17.3 Cinnamon on an old 15" HP laptop (net book ?). It is running a dual core AMD 1.6 Mz CPU and 2G of RAM and obviously integrated graphics. I tested it with XFCE and even lubuntu which ran a little faster I suppose than Cin...

Agreed on PA. I also really appreciate that it is full featured, with unobtrusive ads, and that those can be removed for a reasonable price. I've been using it for years, and don't bother with half the features, but it doesn't matter, it does what I want without fuss.

Mint for life

Hello Mint Community! I have been dabbling with Linux since High School in the late 90s starting with Red Hat. When I experienced the beauty of KDE, and the customization of Gnome, compared to vanilla Windows 95/98 and early MacOS I'd grown up with, I was always ready to convert. Once I had my own c...

Re: [SOLVED] I HAVE HAD IT! Linux/Podcasts/Android...

You can import OPML easily by clicking the + symbol on the main screen of podcast addict, and scrolling down. The interface is a tad confusing at first, but is quick and easy to navigate after you spend a little time with it. It is the best though, I've been using it for years, and it is still well ...

Re: I HAVE HAD IT! Linux/Podcasts/Android...

Why complicate the process by bringing your PC into it? Just use Android podcast software (I recommend Podcast Addict) and manage your podcasts with that directly on your phone. You can disable mobile streaming, and download episodes of podcasts you are subscribed to when you are connected to WIFI, ...

Re: Syntax for the dd command

It will work with SD cards in a USB card reader. In my experience, you can't boot from an SD card in a built in card reader.

Re: WiFi connects but no internet

Try using your cell phone as a WiFi adapter by connecting your phone to your wifi and then plugging it into your computer via USB and turning on tethering in your phones settings. This will let you connect to your WiFi with your computer bypassing your PC's network device. If it works fine, it could...

Re: WiFi connects but no internet

If this was a problem with Windows previously, and now with Mint, it points more to an issue with your modem/router config, rather than an issue with your OS. If you're using a router, try plugging in directly with ethernet and see if there is still an issue. If there is, try bypassing your router a...

Re: Black screen when system started

Can you start Cinnamon in 2d mode? Once computer is fully booted (assuming auto-login) and your screen is black, hit ctrl+alt+backspace, that should drop you into the GUI login screen, from there you can select your session, try 2D Cinnamon. If that works, then you can try selecting the appropriate ...

Re: No wifi on Lenovo Ideapad 100

Just a tip, if you're using internet tethering through your phone to connect your PC over your phones data plan, you can just connect your phone to the WiFi you're trying to connect your PC to and it will use the WiFi internet instead of using your phones data.

Why can't he just browse to /usr/share/applications? Coming from windows, that is what I would consider the equivalent to the C:\Program Files directory.

Right click the clock and go to properties. Asuming you are using digital layout, change format to Custom Format, and insert %m/%d/%y or however you want your date shown after %I:%M %p to insert todays date. If you want to customize it further, you can do %d for day of the month, %m for month, etc i...

Re: Cannot update Linux Mint

You can use Backup Tool (should already be installed) to backup your software selection. This will only backup software downloaded from repositories though, not software downloaded from a third party.

Re: Cannot update Linux Mint

In the future, create separate partitions for / and /home, that way you can keep all your files and program settings if you decide you want to reinstall/upgrade mint.

Re: Need to re-install linux?

Even if the Windows 7 product key has worn off the bottom of your PC, it should still be accessible in your computers BIOS. This can be accessed by pressing ESC, or F1, or F2, or DEL, or some other keys during boot depending on the manufacturer. Once in your BIOS, poke around the various menus looki...
