Re: Bit coin mining and climate change.
I don't know if its true, but I saw an article on the internet that a bitcoin mine(r) was busted for illegally bypassing electric meters. The authorities thought that it was an illegall indoor marijuana grow. It was reported on by the BBC, so most likely true. Sandwell Bitcoin mine found stealing e...

Re: unacceptable slow startup
I don't understand the "sda18" part. Is this an EFI partitioned drive with 18 (or more) partitions? The location of /home has very little to do with the boot process. 'dmesg' typed on its own will do the same as 'cat /var/log/dmesg' (saves a bit of typing). Can pipe its output into a pager...

Re: Overheating. Is lm-sensors reporting wrong temperature?
I've known temperature sensors indicate the inverse of what they should, but that was on any OS. I could blow hot air into it and watch the indicated temperature drop. Might be worth going into the BIOS/EFI and noting temperatures there. Then if you check in Mint as soon as it's running and the temp...

Re: Vulkan api sdk 1.0 released
Possibly the greatest news in the history of Linux :) https://www.khronos.org/vulkan/ We are extremely pleased at the industry’s rapid execution on the Vulkan API initiative. Due to Vulkan’s cross platform availability, high performance and healthy open source ecosystem, we expect to see rapid uptak...

Re: CD loading gives error message
There isn't really anything to load or mount on a blank CD or DVD. They're somewhat like an un-partitioned HDD to the system, so just cancel the message and fire up your writer application. I recommend k3b, but it's a KDE package...

Re: Boot fails after updating nVidia porprietary driver
Hi brinesharks (excellent username lol), I looked up your card on Nvidia site and found that your GTX 650 is supported by the very latest driver, which is 361.28. It was only released about a week ago! I'm using it on my GTX 980. I recommend using the Phoronix supplied PPA which you can download and...

Re: Installed Mint, no bootloader
Hi. Apparently Grub install always says i386, so don't worry about that one. I've been looking at the 'rescatux' rescue CD .iso mentioned on this forum. It has a Grub rescue tool which may do the work you've been trying to do with just a few clicks. It's quite a small and this link explains the step...

Re: Hardware and Privacy
The majority always makes the wrong decision. Then what of democracy? They tend to collapse if you haven't noticed. :D A republic somewhat negates this but we humans are pretty selfish and shortsighted. I'm afraid we'd vote ourselves into future oblivion in exchange for 5 minutes of whatever it is ...

Software Manager - enter the word wine in the search box and click the uninstall button.
It's only about half a gig though. Do you need the space? Or some other concern? (you don't have to answer)

Re: swappiness
Swappiness is such a good word. I guess the 60 value was good when the 40% headroom could quickly be used up. When system memory was expensive and swap was most likely on a slow (or even parked) HDD. A value of 10 would have been much too low in that situation. As memory seems cheap I put 16GB in mi...

Re: Keep getting logged out of Windows
I'm getting old, so I may not live to see the day, but one day, somewhere on the front page of news sites will be the headline: It's Curtains For Windows. I still use it (Windows 7) myself and had an unscheduled update and reboot while I was in the middle of a full screen multi-player racing game re...

Re: Dell Dim 4700 with Linux Mate HDD and Windows Vista HDD
Crazy as it sounds; the OS that cost real money is designed in such a way that it has to be installed on the hardware on which it is to run. So you can't just plug that Vista HDD into a different PC and expect it to work. You'd have to re install Windows on the drive from the Pavilion when you've fi...

Re: Keep getting logged out of Windows
Turn Windows updates off. The only way that could possibly happen is for Windows to do its update thing and reboot like it always needs to - only Mint is (of course) set as the default OS to boot in Grub. Mint gets no input and decides to do its bit to save the environment. Am I right? Look for upda...

Re: What To Do When Mint Crashes / Hangs / Freezes?
First thing I'd do is check if I can get a virtual terminal by pressing CTRL+ALT+F1 (or 2,3,4,5,6 can do different things on each one if you want) and log in. Probably just reboot from there. I use 'shutdown -r now', but only because I've always used that. 'reboot' works just as well iiuc. If I'm in...

Re: Console/Terminal mystery keyboard shortcuts
man bash Page up/down will work in the manual (and in more and less) as will q to quit when you've seen enough. If everything you want to know isn't there, try man readline Trying random key combinations in a terminal is a poor way to learn, but at least you can only break your own account, unless y...

Re: clearing the screen and others
A rectangle on screen where users can enter data? Sounds like a window to me. Is there a good reason why you said in an earlier post "Not interested in a high level language for Linux"? What have you got against high level languages? Why do you think you need to (get others to tell you how...

Re: Duplicate Username on login screen
Hi john john. Welcome to the forum.
I have auto login enabled, so I don't see that, but I think the second, smaller, name would be what you entered for your full name when you installed?
I doubt there's an easy way to change it.

Oh I agree as well! Those companies should fund the democracies of the countries they exploit rather than Big Brother America.

Re: Hardware and Privacy
Unplug that ethernet cable or uninstall that wireless card. That's the only way to not get hacked, tracked, or spied on if you are into conspiracies. That's only the short-sighted answer. The bigger problem is that the MAJORITY will succumb to the spying because they will lose too many conveniences...
