Re: Another Dell hard drive "thrashing" Resolved.

Hmm, deceased? that's what happened to the 15 year old Vostro 200 that also had the thrashing problem.
That's the downfall of spellcheck, 'deceased' is a legitimate word.
Thanks Everyone.

Re: Another Dell hard drive "thrashing"

It appears that the hard drive thrashing has decreased significantly by changing the Timeshift schedule to weekly instead of daily so I have marked the title as resolved.
Thank you to all who helped.

Re: Another Dell hard drive "thrashing"

I think this is what you want. I need to make a logbook of the various bits that have been requested and how get them. The Swap in System Monitor is showing 0% just at the moment but there is no excess hard drive activity either. Thanks [code] System: Host: Dell Kernel: 5.4.0-42-generic x86_64 bits:...

Re: Another Dell hard drive "thrashing"

Thanks for the reply GS3. I have 2 GB of ram as recommended by the system requirements page. The processor is Intel core 2 Duo at 2.93 Ghz. What else would you like to know? I attempted to get into Timeshift while the Hard drive was chattering away and a message came up to try again later as there w...

Re: New install 19.3 now hard drive runs steady for 20 minutes - computer now retired

Good evening. Just to finalize this thread; I have retired the Vostro 200 and replaced it with a Dell Optiplex 380 that is also running Mint 19.3 Mate. I couldn't get the previous machine to behave no matter what.
Thanks for trying guys.

Re: New install 19.3 now hard drive runs steady for 20 minutes

Good evening. I have tried the 4.15.0-99 kernel a couple of times and once while the computer was idle, just the start up screen, and after a few minutes the drive was "thrashing" and continued until I shut it off. I haven't tried the the swappiness thing yet, too much outside stuff to be ...

Re: New install 19.3 now hard drive runs steady for 20 minutes

Good evening. Here is the result of inxi -Fxxxz taken 11 minutes after startup. I tried to find information on what this code does - no luck. This evening it was about 45 minutes until the hard drive stopped chattering along with the jerky mouse response, slow or intermittent page movement, the long...

Re: Freshly installed Linux Mint Mate won't print

Good evening. I tried this entry again; ls -l /etc/nsswitch.conf and got this response: -rw-r--r-- l root root 556 Jul 29 2019 /etc/nsswitch.conf Then I entered this again: lp -d HpLaserjet /etc/nsswitch.conf and got this: request id is HpLaserjet-7 (1 file(s)) then in the upper right corner of the ...

Re: Freshly installed Linux Mint Mate won't print

We are gaining! When I typed in " lpadmin -p HpLaserjet -v ipp://DEV77E5D1.local:631/ipp/print -E -m everywhere" the terminal accepted it. Then I tried the next command entry "lp -d PRINTER_NAME /etc/nsswitch.conf" and got this: " lp: Error - unable to access "nsswitch....

Re: Freshly installed Linux Mint Mate won't print

Well, at least it knows something is connected to the router. When I typed in 'driverless' it returned : ipp://DEV77E5D1.local:631/ipp/print What does that tell you? I typed it in again after turning off the printer and it returned nothing so it is recognizing the printer. I also tried that query fr...

Re: Freshly installed Linux Mint Mate won't print

If anyone has another idea within the limits of my equipment I will give it a try. As it was I had been without a printer for 10 -11 days and needed to get something done.
Thanks,

Re: Freshly installed Linux Mint Mate won't print

Update. I researched the suggestion of using a router; it appears that I would need a more expensive router. All four ports are in use now and the printer requires a cable connection; can be either ethernet or usb and the 140 something page manual for it makes no mention of printers. The Windows 7 h...

Re: Freshly installed Linux Mint Mate won't print

Good morning. After I posted the previous findings the operating system was very slow to shut down so I restarted and shut down again and the same results so it appears that the operating system has been somewhat scrambled. Re: Freshly installed Linux Mint Mate won't print

I didn’t check the thread to see if there were new posts and loaded Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon. Same issue as Kayin, no printing. So I did some serious searching to attempt to learn how to install HPLIP; came up with this: https://www.fosslinux.com/1547/install-hp-printer-drivers-in-ubuntu-linux-mint-...

Re: Freshly installed Linux Mint Mate won't print

Here is what I have done so far: Tried 127.0.0.1:631 , got “Unable to connect”. Next: opened Menu, then selected Control Panel then clicked on the printer icon. Small window opened labelled Printers-localhost; Half way down the window is message: Printing service not available. Start the service on ...
