Kindle e-books

Is there a way to open and read Amazon/Kindle ebooks on Mint ? I've tried Calibre, but I just get a warning that "This book is locked by DRM". I also cannot convert to epub format, I get the same warning ("This book is locked by DRM"). Some of the ebooks won't even open in Calibr...

Re: [Solved] What are my options ?

Or more to the point these days, you will find out when you don't try. I'm definitely not a Windows connoisseur but do still from time to time "fix" systems for people, and don't believe I've even once since Windows 10 manually input a key anywhere when reinstalling Windows unto a system ...

Re: [Solved] What are my options ?

So, based on the answers I got here, I did a bit of online search, and found a way to retrieve the original activation key (that comes with the computer/pre-installed OS) which is stored in the BIOS.... I'm thinking maybe others might need to check too, for reasons, so I'm just posting this here. Yo...

Re: [Solved] What are my options ?

Anyways. If Edge on Linux works, great; that wasn't given after you said to need an add-on, i.e, could've still been Windows-only add-on, but that'd certainly be the best / most minimal effort solution. The upload thing fails to make sense to me so no idea about that then. Well indeed, it's suppose...

Re: What are my options ?

Exchanging license keys is basically not possible; when the system comes with an activated copy of Windows that copy's license is linked to the hardware of that system; your Windows 11 key would be of no use to another system. If you also activated a Windows 10 copy that copy is now linked to that ...

Re: What are my options ?

So, I've tried Deepakdeshp's solution, installing Edge, I've downloaded the deb package from Microsoft's website, it actually works. There's a warning telling me to install the security stuff, but I can still log in and check stuff even without installing it. That's good news. :) Now, there's still ...

Re: What are my options ?

No need to "emulate"; virtualization software on a modern CPU allows for sharing the hardware between systems, i.e., can run unemulated, unmodified Windows in a virtual machine. Fast enough graphics on a single shared GPU can still be an issue for e.g. games but for something like a webbr...

Re: What are my options ?

One option is you can install edge on Mint. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://linuxize.com/post/how-to-install-edge-browser-on-ubuntu-20-04/&ved=2ahUKEwjBhv3Iv7T3AhWPqFYBHVMmBXcQFnoECCkQAQ&usg=AOvVaw0kdA-k0UWD_Bd7ymFChDJY Thank you for your answer. :) ...

[Solved] What are my options ?

Something happened with my laptop, and I need to redo my full install (not a Mint issue). I've been dual booting sofar, but I would like to ditch Windows. It takes too much room on the laptop, the updates always make the whole system (both partitions) go awry, I would probably end up needing to pay ...

Re: Opening a file with the user preferred application and security

Thank you for your answer. :) The documentation has some helpful warnings: https://docs.python.org/3/library/subprocess.html#subprocess.Popen. subprocess.call is an older, obsoleted function. You would use subprocess.run now for similar, if you want to wait for the command to complete. You don't wan...

[Solved] Opening a file with the user preferred application and security

I'm trying to figure something, unfortunately, most books and stuff I'm reading explain how things work on Windows, so I'm in need of more information for how it works on Linux (in general). I'm trying to find the best way for a software made with Tkinter to open a file (like a video, a mp3 recordin...

Re: Video rendering and codecs

Adding a bit more questions in the hopes someone might have insights or tips. About Ogg + Theora + Vorbis, which I think is the most interesting format as it works everywhere. I defo was able to use this and watch the video before, I don't get why the output is so bad and pixelated here ? Does anyon...

Video rendering and codecs

I've posted a topic a while ago : https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=362774 . I have just installed the new version of Blender today, and most issues are fixed for at least video editing and rendering (I haven't had time to test the animation/picture rendering really yet). With th...

Re: [Solved] Laptop temperature peaking at 100°C ?

Anyway, I'm not planning on testing much with this laptop, I'll just use it for whatever it's supposed to do, which it does just fine. As far as I've noticed, everything else seems to be normal. At worst, if needed, I'll render with 2 threads, which is sure unusual, but whatever. I'll probably try a...

Re: [Solved] Laptop temperature peaking at 100°C ?

One other way to test computer / laptop cooling issues, is to run the stress command. It's not installed by default on Linux mint, but easily installed by apt install stress Using this command you can fully load your cpu, e.g for my Ryzen 7 3700x system, 8 cores, 16 threads, I use stress -c 16 , an...

Re: [Solved] Laptop temperature peaking at 100°C ?

I reckon that to even consider taking the computer back to the vender, unfortunately you would have to test the laptop in Windows and if your temps were unreasonably high whilst rendering simple objects, you might then be able to take the computer back to the vender. I say 'might', as depending on ...

Re: [Solved] Laptop temperature peaking at 100°C ?

Your CPU has 4 cores and 8 threads. Threads are not nearly as fast for many types if work as two threads run in parallel in only part of one core. There are other parts of the core where both threads have to wait their turn. 8 processes would generate a lot of heat without gaining much speed when t...

Re: Laptop temperature peaking at 100°C ?

I think I found the issue. The threads (for rendering) were "automatically detected" and were set on 8, well that's too much for my laptop. 4 still seems to be too much  , the rendering will be at 80°C, peaking at 95°C (but just 15 seconds longer than when set to 8 ). It seems I sho...

Re: Laptop temperature peaking at 100°C ?

Hi, If your laptop is brand new and seems to have hardware problems (noise, temperature), bring it back to your seller for a warranty repair or replacement. Regards, MN Well, it's brand new from November. As far as I noticed, the issue only occurs when rendering pictures. That's also the only time ...
