Freezing on shutdown

So twice now my computer froze while shutting down at the point where you see the linux mint symbol. When I restarted my computer I couldn't find any crash reports. So far this only happened to me twice in the last month. I was wondering if anyone had any idea what could be causing it, or a way to f...

Re: Cut or Copy into Sidebar

I'm using Cinnamon 5.4.0

Also, I use extra panels a lot. One of those features I'm pretty sure windows doesn't have that I love about linux.

Cut or Copy into Sidebar

This is probably a stupid question, but I'm not entirely sure what this place is called which makes it hard to search. When you open a folder you have a sidebar with some locations. I have a lot of folders bookmarked and use it to move files quickly around. For some reason sometimes it has a copy ic...

Re: What is Unity Game software?

I use unity to create games. I think it's a amazing program to create games, specially if your new to programming.

The fact that unity supports linux is the main reason I was able to move to linux mint.

Re: Restart and open grub

I could never get that to work no matter how many times I rebooted. I ended up editing the grub file to stay open so I could select the kernel.

Restart and open grub

I find it kind of annoying to open grub when I need to. I know that windows has an option that lets you restart and open boot. Which was really helpful when installing mint. I think it would be useful if mint had an option like that for grub.

Re: A Very Good Distro

I moved to linux mint from windows 7, mainly because I hate windows 10. But I ended up liking mint more then windows 7. The OS is more stable, and even when I do run into problems they are normally very easy to fix even with my limited knowledge. I always heard windows is more user friendly then lin...

Good Monitors for Linux Mint?

I like to keep my screen fairly dark, specially with so much white on the screen, but this makes it hard to view dark images/videos/games. I tried some options to lighten my screen, other then using the annoying buttons below the monitor, but nothing is working good. I found DDC Control which seems ...

Re: Force Grub to open on reboot?

Thank you GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu worked. Now if I ever need to change kernels, I have a easy way of accessing that.

I heard a few places say to update grub2. So just to be clear I update grub not grub2?

Re: Force Grub to open on reboot?

Anyway I would still like to know how to get into grub. I tried editing the file, but it still wouldn't open. Is there a way to force it open? Like a "restart and open grub" option? Not clear what file you tried editing. However, as deck_luck suggests, Grub's default behaviour (i.e., unle...

Force Grub to open on reboot?

I've just spent the last 4 hours trying to fix my computer. After updating my computer I lost my ability to connect to the internet wirelessly. I believe it was because of the new kernel, so I spent the day trying to open grub to switch to the old one with no success. I eventually got sick of trying...

Re: Grabbing a files path and name without extension

... I been working on a bash file that extracts a zip file into a folder named the same as the zip. For example. I would want video23.zip to extract its content into a folder next to it called video23. ... Ok, how did you test the bash file? Where is the bash file? What is the name of the test.zip ...

Re: Linux vulnerabilities

That's actually why I moved to Linux. I didn't like windows 10, but I was willing to live with it. But then I found out how they were updating windows 10 I knew I had to find something else. I had enough problems with windows 7 updates.

Re: Grabbing a files path and name without extension

Nope that code didn't work all. Is there a way I can test this code in the terminal so I can see what error it's getting? I feel like that would be a big help. Shift-jis is a language pack that lets me open files with Japanese encoding. If I use the file browser version then the letters will be all ...

Re: Grabbing a files path and name without extension

I mainly wanted to make this because I zip and unzip a lot of japanese files and it got annoying running to the terminal every time. My plan was to make a bash file that would do everything for me. All I would have to do is right-click on the zip and click "Open With". unzip -O shift-jis $...

I saw that code while searching, but what if it's rar. I believe unzip still extracts that.
If you needed to unpack rar, you could have said so the first time around.

man unrar
No it's not that. I'm just saying I need code that removes more then a zip extension.
