All this slide rule talk is making me nostalgic for my now lost Hemmi Bamboo.

Re: [SOLVED] Repair a Crucial 250GB SSD

I have very little idea on how SSDs actually work but I doubt that a 1 or a 0 is 'something' or 'nothing' or the reverse. I think that a 1 is 'something' and a 0 is 'something else'. The problem with having 'nothing' is a problem of sensitivity to outside influences such as distant thunderstorms, pa...

Re: [SOLVED] Repair a Crucial 250GB SSD

Thanks all for the many good suggestions. I have learned a lot during this exercise. I'm rather embarrassed to relate that after trying just about everything over two days that the problem was a faulty SATA to USB cable! The reason I'm embarrassed is that after a full working life in the technical g...

Re: I wish the Dictionaries that check spelling were half arse decent

I used to be able the type 'The quick brown fox etc ryryryry' as fast as a 50baud Siemens 100 would go..

And we invented the term 'bit bucket' in 1963. Thats where the chads from the punched tape went..

Re: Repair a Crucial 250GB SSD

Thanks for the tips. I have deleted partitions, written zeros, redone partition tables etc. Last try I started with all good and a single NTFS Partition. I get to the part of the installation where you go 'Something else' , Change, Select Ext4 and mount point (\) then OK and Install. Stuff happens f...

[SOLVED] Repair a Crucial 250GB SSD

Hi all My plan was to install Mint 20 on an external usb SSD to use with my windows laptop. I already was doing this with an older SSD but wanted to start over. Somehow during the installation an error occurred. I tried to start over to no avail. The SSD works fine when formatted to NTFS but when fr...

Re: Mouse finger?

Thanks for the input people.. I've had my fill of doctors for the time being after major back surgery last year. I am now pretty used to middle finger scrolling after a few weeks. If I can keep the way I am now for another three years I'll be 80 and wondering when I need to update to Mint 21  G...

Re: External USB HDD powers off

I only solved a similar problem (on a windows machine) by removing the HDD from the enclosure and connecting it via a $10 SATA to USB dongle from Amazon.. Worked fine ever after.

Mouse finger?

Hi all, A few times over the last several months my forefinger has become swollen and stiff. I invented a name for this complaint 'mouse finger' and on checking with DuckDuck found that it is in fact a real thing. It appears that it is caused by inflammation of the tendons in the finger, probably du...

Re: Rainbows. Rainbows? Rainbows!

Many years ago I signed up at a website with the user name pachinko which the forum software converted to pa***o and that became my user name for the duration. Dafuq?! 46 years ago I spent half the night playing Pachinko at Nikko with a young Japanese chap. So funny. Sorry, off topic..

Re: Chromium - none on mint 20

I did a one off defeat of the snap blocking file according to the Fossbytes link below to get chromium.
Worked fine. I don't know about updating. Maybe will have to go though the same process again.

I watched again after a few years 'Man of Aran' . Some 1934 b/w goodness from the west of Ireland. A different time and place.

I've still got a bottle of 'Teletype' oil and a tube of grease. Lost the little brush and the carbon tetra chloride must have evaporated.
