Re: Hypnotix
I'm also starting to play around with this. What a fantastic resource for the language student - I can listen to TV in pretty much any language I want, and the picture that I am getting on 2006 MacPro is great - no smearing, great resolution. Congrats n a great job.

Re: How to upgrade to Linux Mint 20.1
Mac Mini 2.1, 1.83 CPU, 4GB RAM, £20 SSD from Amazon. Ran Mint 19.3, Mint 20 fine as well, after a few resolved issues with Lastpass. Sorry if this is the wrong thread to reply in.

Re: Why does mint performance improve over time?
Sorry, missed your reply. I changed the network card, and this has made a very big difference. I just went for a PCI-E Intel adapter, which worked first time with no drivers issues. The old card is still plugged in but disabled - when I get some time I'll remove it entirely. Its not very accessible.

Re: Why does mint performance improve over time?
Thanks for this. I'm still plugging away for a permanent fix. I changed to XFCE Mint 20 and it's been better. I've also managed to download and run the Broadcomm wifi card firmware update. The thing that's frustrating is that 10% of the time, the machine is super fast, which stops me scrapping it. T...

Re: Linux Mint 20 “Ulyana” Xfce released!
Beautifully simple install of XFCE on my two old (15 years) macs. Both are running really well now, and I appreciated the default install with no need to mess around with partitions. Thanks for your efforts and talents.

Re: Help me install Linux mint on my 2006 Mac Pro 1.1
As Fabien pointed out, the CPU is 64 bit. I've successfully installed the 64 bit 19.3 on my 1.1, using the 32EFI install images hosted on Mattgadient's site. I initially had some very big issues with performance, which on my machine is linked to the wifi driver. I've turned wifi off and use a hardwi...

I think I've SO:VED Why does mint performance improve over time?
I believe this problem was due to an issue with the wifi drivers, though I don't really understand exactly what was going on. I am using a wired connection. But a wifi process starts up whenever the machine is booted. With this wifi process running, the machine crawls. If I kill the process off the ...

Why does mint performance improve over time?
What does Mint do to improve its performance over the first few days of running? I'm asking because I've found that if I shut my machine down and then restart it, it will initially perform much worse than it was before closing it down. This primarily relate to the graphics performance. Video replay ...

Re: Very Slow Mint 19,3 Tricia on Macpro 2.1 tower
I just wanted to close this with an update. I remained surprised by the terrible performance of this Mac Pro 1.1 running Linux, and tried a few things using parts I had lying around. I pulled the rotational Hard Drive and replaced with an SSD - made absolutely no difference, still terrible. I replac...

Re: Very Slow Mint 19,3 Tricia on Macpro 2.1 tower
But works fine on low powered mac mini??? I have been experimenting, and find that even though 19.3 runs terribly on a powerful Macpro 1.1 tower with loads of RAM and good graphics card and 2 2.66 processors, its absolutely fine on a mac mini 2.1 with 4GB of ram and one 1.83 processor. I'd love to u...

Re: Very Slow Mint 19,3 Tricia on Macpro 2.1 tower
Thanks for your help - its actually got 16GB of RAM, so thought it would be OK. I'll persevere with it for a bit then if I can't fix it I'll try puppy linux on it and see what happens

SOLVED: Very Slow Mint 19,3 Tricia on Macpro 2.1 tower
I downloaded a 32EFI 64 bit install image from Mattgadient's site, and installed it on a spare Macpro 1.1. I just followed the instructions and it worked first time. I am really impressed with the functionality, and look - its great. But it is also unusably slow - much slower than the Lion OSX it ha...
