Re: MP3 codecs

Each distro is unique in the sense that they have different views on things such as proprietary codecs and as a result some will include them and some won't.

Think of each distro as having a certain target audience which expects certain things.

Re: Help Removing Linux

Hi Luke, its too bad you're leaving the world of Linux and going back to Windows. For most day to day use (surfing, email, word processing) Linux should do everything Windows can. I find that in my business use (web design) and personal use, I use Linux 100% of the time. If you're a gamer, yes you w...

Re: MP3 codecs

There are two versions of Linux Mint. Main Edition and Universal Edition. The Main Edition includes all of the proprietary codecs while the Universal Edition "aims to provide the same features as the Main Edition without including proprietary software, patented technologies or support for restr...

Re: Need Linux Mint media?

Its not like that at all. I sent off some media to KC1Di (http://forums.linuxmint.com/memberlist. ... le&u=10350) in the past. He wasn't able to download Mint 7 KDE as it was too big.

Anyone else is more than welcome to ask for a copy.

Re: Got Linux Mint! How do i do this?

Can you be more specific about what is showing up? If you deleted the partitons and removed the entries from GRUB, then there should be no indication of ubuntu anywhere

Re: Got Linux Mint! How do i do this?

Goto terminal and type the following

Code: Select all

sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
Just make sure you make a copy of the first in case you mess things up. Comment or delete the lines in reference to Ubuntu. Then use gParted to delete your ubuntu partitions.

PC-BSD or DesktopBSD

Has anyone tried these variants of BSD? I am intrigued by them, however am turned off by the lack of hardware / wireless support. Does anyone have any stories to share?

Re: No space left on device? I paritioned 20GB.

I should have been more clear with /media/xxxxx - I used xxxxx as a placeholder for whatever you called the partition. I don't have access to the screenshot you posted so I am unable to tell you exactly what to fill in the blank with. If you mounted the partition as /media/My20GBDR you would sudo ch...

Re: No space left on device? I paritioned 20GB.

If you partioned the drive as /media/data or /media/xxxxx then you have to goto the terminal and use the following command: sudo chmod 777 /media/data The reason you can not access this is because when the drive is mounted, only root has write access to the drive. The chmod 777 gives everyone read, ...

Something like this? http://fosswire.com/post/2007/08/unixlinux-command-cheat-sheet/ Thanks for the cheat sheet. It looks great. I know I will be using it myself. Re: tmp folder

This directory usually gets cleared out on its own during the log out process. I would just be careful of what you delete as some of the files in the /tmp directory may pertain to programs and processes currently running.

Here's A Thought: Linux Mint Free Media Project

Hopefully this has not been brought up in the past, but I would like to suggest a project where by we have volunteers (and yes I am the first to volunteer) that burn and mail out CD / DVD media of Linux Mint to users who wish to try out the OS but can not because they do not have a burner, their ban...
