Re: Mepis 7.0 goes final.

Warren wrote about it, but I can't find the article. I think the main concerns are two. The software on the long term support Ubuntu releases had security updates, but no updates to the software itself. So it quickly became dated. The other concern was the fact that it was difficult to update from o...

Re: Mepis 7.0 goes final.

To me it looks professional and clean. Attractive. But I'm still partial to blue.

Mepis 7.0 goes final.

Mepis is mentioned, along with PCLOS, as one of the 'friendly' distros in our forums. Thought people might like to know that the Debian based Mepis 7 went final yesterday. (They completed their move away from Ubuntu.) Worth a look. Can be downloaded here.

Sometimes a search on the Ubuntu forums will come up with a solution to a problem for the newbie because Mint is so close to Ubuntu.

Or we as 'helpers' could direct a newbie to a thread in Ubuntu where the same problem was solved.

And sometimes we could admit that we're stumped.

Downloaded and tried the Ubuntu Edgy. Same thing - ppracer works on my wife's machine (where I can't install Mint  ) but it does NOT work on my older machine with the ATI rage 128 card. Oddly enough, the very latest Mepis, which uses repositories from Ubuntu, has a fully functioning ppracer on ...

ati detection, drivers, 3d effects

I guess this is sort of a bug report in advance. :D My older machine has no 3d acceleration with Mint, though it does with many other distros. (I must add that TuxRacer (ppracer) works perfectly with the LiveCD on my wife's newer computer that has on-board video and sound.) It's definitely the rage ...

I must add that TuxRacer (ppracer) works perfectly with the LiveCD on my wife's newer computer that has on-board video and sound. It's definitely the rage 128 drivers needed for my older machine.

Actually I do that by copying and pasting lines from the other distros I have got installed on the same machine. But sometimes the difference in the xorg file is something I can't pinpoint easily, and after awhile it doesn't seem worth the effort. So many installs, so much tinkering. :) If I do find...

Thanks Zolly, but you have a Radeon. Makes all the difference in the world unfortunately. Mine's a Rage 128 aiw pro. The problem shows up in late Ubuntus and a very few other distros, but not in PCLOS, Mepis, Suse 10, Breezy, or any of the others I tried over the years. The card, good in its time, i...

"And you can't install grub were you like and you can not put it on floppy. This is on all ubuntu dists." I will have to tell my system that it can't boot from a Ubuntu floppy, even though it does. Ubuntu has the best Grub as well. It picks up all the other distros and names them pre...

The most sensible to me has always been from the largest to the smallest, which also shows up a lot. The advantange is you can take it right down to hours, minutes, seconds... as far as you want, depending on how important preciseness is.

Nicely done Clem!!!! The only thing I noticed (other than the 3d is not very good because Mint is based on Dapper - rage128 known issue) is that I couldn't stream well from shares on my other Linux computer. From my own hard drive I could play mp3s and avi files, but I couldn't stream them from the ...

And according to posts at the Ubuntu forum, problems with ppracer started with the move to Dapper for those with the ATI rage 128 series of video cards. (But the problem isn't in other distros by the way.) Writing this just on the off chance there is a relatively simple fix that can be put into Mint...

Found where I've experienced the missing words on the opening page before!!!!!! Found an install of Ubuntu Dapper on an old hard drive that I haven't used lately. Booted the Ubuntu. Tried the ppracer and it had exactly the same symptoms - no text, and slow, jerky movements. Ah well. It isn't Mint's ...

Actually I did download with Synaptic - seemed the easiest way, and it added a few more packages. So I did get the Ubuntu package. Could be the fact that it's a LiveCD I guess. But the missing print stirs a memory of another distro somewhere in my past.I rebooted into Ubuntu Breezy and ppracer worke...
