Well, I know it isn't Windows. : ) I've been a Linux user since 2000, but I don't get into the techie stuff of it, as you can tell by my issues here. : ) Anyway, I use mintUpdate and I thought it would tell me of major upgrades is all. Thank you for the guidance! I have a lot to learn, but mostly I ...

Re: Can't Adjust LCD Backlight on Laptop
I tried that but I couldn't get the CTRL ALT F1 to cooperate. It gave me a whiny message about configuration and then when I tried to do it again to get the message, it just does a weird little flash at the very top of the screen and then no change. =/

Re: Can't Adjust LCD Backlight on Laptop
The solution brought by lagagnon is the best one. xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL native To make this run on every restart: You have to go to System > Preferences > Startup Application Preferences. Then Click on add. For the name, call it Screen Brightness (or anything you want) and pu...

Re: Help me stop missing Windows Media Player. Please.
Just wanted to follow up to this that Songbird was a good suggestion! I have two small issues with it: it doesn't support my hotkeys and it doesn't default come with a queue. Other than that, it is fitting my needs. I like it much better than other things I've tried (Amarok, Exaile) although I have ...

Error with using Launcher
Ok, so I use the following code: LD_PRELOAD=/usr/games/smac/Loki_Compat/libstdc++-3-libc6.2-2-2.10.0.so:/usr/lib/libX11.so /usr/games/smac/smac.dynamic to launch SMAC (Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri) on my computer. I wanted to create a Launcher, so I put that code in the command, but when I double clic...

Help me stop missing Windows Media Player. Please.
There are so many media players. I want one that will let me see which songs I've just imported or organize by date/time imported. I want to check tags on new stuff as I bring it in. Suggestions? I have been having issues with my brightness keys not working to adjust the brightness. I adjusted the brightness using the Power Mgmt settings to 60% restarted the game and the same thing... Re: Why is my game practically invisible?
At the same time that the game is loaded with the light opacity, everything else is totally normal.
I just changed the Compiz settings to "Minimal"... restarted the game and its the same and I can't see the very bottom of the window.
Attached screenshot.
What do you think?

Why is my game practically invisible?
Hello. Actually not sure if this is a hardware or software problem, but I just installed an old favorite game: Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. Got it installed and ran it and it didn't seem to like my screen resolution, but even more, it loaded but was practically invisible. The opacity on it was probab...
