Re: Perl

I meant the red icon the update manager gives when theres an update OK, thanks. I guess your setup is different than mine, because this is what I see for a Perl update reminder: /home/mike/Desktop/perl.jpg No red icon - or at least these color blind eyes don't see a red icon. I think Damien has sum...

Any change you have TimeShift installed. If so, it wouldn't hurt to revert back a couple days to see if that helps.

Re: PhotoGimp Question from a LM Newbie

I'm giving Crossover a try instead. It's said to work better than wine. If it works, I'll pay up and buy the key.
Another option: Wine would not install for me, but Play on Linux works good.

Re: Perl

The red icon is really bugging me Where is this red icon? The Perl symbol is usually a camel. If you think you uninstalled Perl from Linux, you probably didn't. But I could be wrong. Perhaps this page will give you (and your computer science professor) some peace of mind: https://stackoverflow.com/...

Re: file permissions of executable files

Hmmm. The standard answer is to not change any permissions of files below your user name directory. Here is how I think the permissions should be on a fresh install: -rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 30800 Aug 11 2016 fusermount -rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 43088 Sep 16 13:43 mount -rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 64424 Jun 2...

Aluratek 4K HD Webcam

I have no problem. I just thought I would post some results from using a 4K HD Webcam purchased in 10/2020. It cost $130 at Best Buy. The video is outstanding. It takes good pictures and videos with "Cheese" software. Also works good with remote meeting services like Zoom. The sound is good, but not...

Re: Terminal 'cutting' text results

Regarding: I don't know of any terminal that does wrapping of lines I'm thinking you meant to say "I don't know of any terminal that does NOT do wrapping of lines". If not, GNOME 3.28.1 wraps lines, and I don't see any way to turn it off. Not that I would want to turn it off. Regarding: I have tried...

You can also create a shortcut by holding Ctrl and Shift, and dragging the application / file / folder to where you want the shortcut, and unclicking.

Re: Cannot open hyperlinks in PDF documents

For the record, Okular is the only program I have to open PDF files, and all the links in the PDF I supplied are working on this "vacation" computer. I am anxious to get home and try it on my home computer. I suspect the links will not work on that computer.

Re: Copying a file over 2gb with Nemo

I'm going to say it is a bug for you, but not for everybody. On my LM 19.3 Cinnamon I copy a 3.1 GB file to my 30 GB thumb drive (50% full) in about 5 minutes. First 30 seconds is fast (30 MB/sec), then it decreases to 17 - 20 MB / sec. At 99% done it just freezes at "0 seconds left" for the last 2 ...

Re: Cannot open hyperlinks in PDF documents

I had the same problem, but it appears to be gone now. My links are suddenly working on this computer. Try this file: http://www.mflan.com/temp/Jul2020ss.pdf All those links in that file are working fine for me at the moment, but on my home computer, I swear they do not work. On my home computer I g...

Re: Copy/paste sometimes does not take

I have this problem to some extent too, but almost never from a regular text file. I get the problem when copying from other applications, especially Libre Calc and maybe Thunderbird.

I just did some testing and at the moment it seems to be working perfectly.

Re: Wine Installation

For whatever it is worth, I had problems with the Wine in the LM Software Manager. It installed fine, but I could not install my Windows programs. I stumbled across Play on Linux and it worked much better. I plan to try again someday with Wine, but this Play on Linux works better for me.

See if this gets you anywhere:

It didn't work for me on 19.3 Cinnamon.

You ask a good question. I just have not found a good answer for it yet.

Re: what is the file which link customized folders and their specific icons

Regarding this statement: "all except the links between my icons and the corresponding folders?" Does that mean the folders you are looking at in Nemo are soft links to physical folders located in another directory? Read up on soft links here: https://linuxhandbook.com/symbolic-link-linux/ One way t...

Re: Timeshift and System Updates

Timeshift is an excellent program and very, very necessary. You want it to take a snapshot daily - for sure - automatically. If you are a minimalist trying to run Mint on a 125GB OS drive, then move the TS save location to another drive. I only restore a TS backup about 6 times a year - maybe less. ...

Have you seen this behaviour on your computer, or is this just reported by kids on the other end?
Oddly I don't find anybody else on the web complaining about this.
