Re: USB External hard drive dropped and now not recognized. How to recover files?

These things are usually built well enough to withstand the occasional drop, so it doesn't sound good. One suggestion would be to get the case open and extract the hard drive and mount it in some other known good drive case. It (just) may be that, for example, the power supply/usb interface board ha...

Re: Asus ROG Strix X570 E Gaming Motherboard

If it helps, my ROG STRIX Z390-E GAMING is showing no problems at all. Been running LM19.3 for several months. The onboard wifi was recognised straight-away during original install.

openshot install

I just downloaded Openshot with the Software Manager. Version 2.4.1. Got it to do the video editing I wanted, then since it said Update Available, I downloaded that. Executing this download makes a virtual disk on the desktop (/media/freshminted/Appimage), and you can run the new version of Openshot...

Re: Compress PDF-files

I've had success with this terminal command: gs -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -dPDFSETTINGS=/ebook -sOutputFile=newFile.pdf originalFile.pdf (needs ghostscript, but that should be present in a linux system). ebooks use tighter compression than other content creators (eg pdflatex). But some pdf...

Re: download images from iphone

Occasionally my iphone talks to Mint. But usually I connect it and an "afc://<big hex number>:3/" Nemo window comes up, which is useless. Sometimes deleting the ":3/" off the end makes it work. Sometimes not. You have to get to the DCIM folder, the photos are in there in folders that are not numbere...

Re: convert .avi files for television

ffmpeg -i inputfile.avi outputfile.mp4

If your TV doesn't play mp4's then replace that file extension with whatever type you need.

Re: Using Mint on Intel Atom processor

I have an old emachines em250 netbook with N270 atom and 2GB ram, which I use when travelling. Bought it in 2010. Been around the world a couple of times, but it's just sat on the shelf for the past six months. Originally XP, it runs LM19.3 Cinnamon now. A bit slow, but it is fine for email and a fe...

Re: Intermittent constant hard drive activity problem

The default settings for timeshift can cause this sort of disk accessing with low end hardware. I set mine to only keep monthly snapshots which improved it quite a bit, although when the monthly backup rolls around, the computer is unusable for a while. Also if you use firefox, some webpages are rea...

Re: how to sort on comma delimited fields enclosed in double quotes

Save it all as a CSV (Comma Separated Variable) text file with your favourite text editor (Xed etc). You'll have to join up all those lines, it looks like there should really only be three lines of csv data. The load it into Libreoffice Calc (or M$ Excel) and go from there.
