grub boot repair

Had a few unwanted hours with my wife's computer. Just wanted to install the firefox/kernel/etc updates while she was at work. Normally this is pretty painless, but this time after the reboot found myself in the "minimal bash like..." grub interface. Tried a few things found in posts here ...

Re: How to set a timer?

You can install Gnome Clocks from the software manager or simply open terminal and paste this command sudo apt install gnome-clocks 14-57-30.png This actually looked useful, so I installed it using sudo apt install gnome-clocks . But I got a version without all the timer presets and looks like it's...

Try the "at" command? You may have to install it first.

Do you mean locate? If so, it's a good idea to remove it from weaker systems.

And use the hacks suggested in viewtopic.php?p=1503202#p1503202 to generally fix this after installation, but you will still run into windows that need to be moved with the ALT trick sometimes.

Re: Software index is broken, "Try 'apt --fix-broken install'"

I also got this when trying to update audacious the other day. Tried removing broken packages in Synaptic, "sudo apt install -f", renaming /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libaudqt.so.2.3.0 (which was the problem file) and other things and generally getting nowhere. Eventually I tried "sudo ...

Re: Editing Subtitles?

Having written matlab (!) code years ago to retime subtitles, this could be really useful. Subtitle Workshop does run under Wine. I just downloaded & checked it, but am not conversant enough with the program to know if there are problems. One thing it doesn't do is open mp4 videos, but I think t...

Re: how to stop image darkening

No. I think it is too tricky. Is there some setting in LM20 that "darkens" the other windows (not the frontmost active window)? Although that appears to be the wrong way round for your example.

Try another router? This stuff does work.

Is your router supplied by your ISP? They can be locked down so much you can't alter their rules.

Re: No wireless connection on resume, (only) after upgrade to Mint 20.1?

I also have this problem on Cinnamon 19.3. Not every time the computer wakes from sleep. Sometimes wifi is fine, other times I get "activation of network failed" popups. I either turn wireless connectivity off in network manager or re-boot. After a reboot wifi connects happily and is fine ...

Re: Thunderbird and profile from Windows

The last time I did this (about a year ago) I let Thunderbird set itself up with a new profile and then copied all my old computer's profile into there, leaving the new profile folder names intact. Before this, no amount of copying the old folders and trying to point Thunderbird (or Firefox) at the ...

Re: do you feel mint forum is a bit too plain and looks boring to beginners ?

Ahh the eternal "If it's not broken don't fix it" vs. "Change for change's sake" argument. How I missed it. Look, the forum loads quickly, can include images, code snippets and links to other sites and rarely descends into a flame war (the younger readers may need to google that ...

I use a very similar emachines em250 for travelling. It is fine for email, light web browsing and watching videos on the plane. But don't expect too much!

Make sure it has the latest firmware and it will probably need a new battery.

Re: SSH

Is your router passing the ssh requests to your server? You usually have to explicitly make a rule in the router to do this, pass on incoming ssh traffic. A very good idea to run fail2ban on your server and not use port 22 to the outside world. Use a non-standard port. I've been absolutely hammered ...

I have connected to offsite Swann cameras using their Windows Homesafe software (awful) running under Wine, from Linux Mint. Had to set up firewall rules for various ports and the resource usage shot up enormously. Easier to run it on a dedicated windows box.
