gave up on Mint - installed MX Linux17-X64

all shutdown/reboot/logout options work without problems

will come back to Mint at alater date

presently just want new laptop operational and Windows free.

Well, did USB Thumdrive install of MX Linux 16.1

Benq display now works in full-screen portrait mode at 1080x1920

will compare Mint 17.3 and mx 16.1 settings

All OK now thanks

edited /etc/default/grub

set GRUB_GFXMODE=800x600 (1280x720 didnt work)

ran sudo update-grub

rebooted

set monitor config via applet to non-duplicate (non-mirroring) displays at 1920x1080

All boots ok with both monitors attached.
