Re: Considerations multi booting on an SSD

I am still reading through this post https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=30623 as well as the links it contains. By all accounts, Fred was a genius. (Probably still is, just no longer active here.) That thread is ten years old. Should not be relied on for anything. As for the Firefox ...

Re: 19.2 Firefox wrong version

Thank you for the background Karl. As you say many ways lead to Rome. In my case I do not actually want to run FF on the 19.2 machine as a primary machine. The 18.3 machine is my primary one and the whole purpose of the exercise, as indicated in my other post, was to check software and file compatib...

Re: Considerations multi booting on an SSD

The heading I chose for this post was “Considerations multi booting on an SSD” I have discovered that one of the considerations is that I cannot use Firefox in the way that I have always done. Please see my post at https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=305969&p=1719121#p1719121 That post...

$ apt version firefox

That latter result typed not copied.

Re: 19.2 Firefox wrong version

Not too sure about your second thing karlchen although useful knowledge. The objective here was not to create a new profile on the 19.2 machine, only to see what implications there were should I decide to upgrade my 18.3 one. Hence my other post referred to above. This issue is most definitely an ‘i...

Re: 19.2 Firefox wrong version

If you're running your web browser with sudo you've got bigger problems tbh. Not only will that mess up all kinds of things, it also means any browser malware will get full control of your system. Congratulations. Sorry, that was a typo. I only run profilemanager as a normal user. That code box sho...

Re: 19.2 Firefox wrong version

For many years now I have used a separate drive for my data. Data to me included both Firefox and Thunderbird profiles. Using ‘profilemanager’ on the installed machine makes it easy to access the Mozilla profiles wherever they are stored on that machine. I go further though. My data partition is sha...

Re: 19.2 Firefox wrong version

I am more or less certain that the file ownership and permissions had nothing to do with it but when you have run out of ‘normal’ ideas you have got to look further afield. The annoying thing is that there must be thousands of users who have upgraded without any similar problems and to compound that...

Re: Considerations multi booting on an SSD

Thank you for the explanation pbear. I had not given any of those facts any thought at all. I am still reading through this post https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=30623 as well as the links it contains. That is the beauty of this forum, the information is there – but it can take ages...

Re: Considerations multi booting on an SSD

Thank you rene. That is what I would expect, but I don't see that as a problem. Probably just my ignorance. Can it cause other conflicts then, and if so how please?.

19.2 Firefox wrong version

Running LM 19.2 on a spare machine to test file compatibility with those on my 18.3 machine. Copied all of my data from 18.3 into a folder on the 19.2 machine and that includes both Firefox and Thunderbird profiles. Closed down both FF and TB on the 18.3 machine then, on the 19.2 machine used $ sudo...

Re: Considerations multi booting on an SSD

Main thing to understand is that, if you don't do something, each new installation will take control of Grub. How to prevent or fix that is a matter of preference. I tried installing secondary systems without a bootloader as Sgthawker suggests. Boot became noisy (loss of quiet splash) and I had shu...

Re: Considerations multi booting on an SSD

Hi jglen490, Old habits die hard I guess. I got caught out once with an excess of log files. I had not noticed that a printer driver was running wild. The first thing that happened was that I could not log on. I was going round in circles, entering my user name then password then being asked to do i...

Re: Considerations multi booting on an SSD

Thank you all for your comments. I take it that my understanding of SDDs is from the dark ages – a bit like me really. As I write I am setting up LM 19.2 on the test machine. I have used Gparted on the live DVD (USB drive) to partition up my shiny new system. The first thing I noticed while doing th...

Considerations multi booting on an SSD

I am considering upgrading from my current LM 18.3 to 19.2 to see how the upgrade works with my current data and programs. I have a acquired a spare UEFI machine with a 1TB SSD (it is an Acer All-In-One) to test on. So as an experiment, at least initially, I am planning to dual boot Mint 18.3 and 19...

How many /boot partitions needed when dual booting LM

I have a new and much larger HDD and intend to set up my own partitions using ‘Something Else’ in the installation menu to install Mint 18.3. This is something I have done many times before in a single boot scenario. I then plan to add 19.2 in another set of partitions following on from the first se...

Re: Live 19.2 DVD does not have Synaptic

bigal, I don't think what you're trying to do can be done while running from the live environment. Mint has to be installed first. I was concerned as I could not test the system without Synaptic and, after all, testing a system is one of the advantages of a live DVD. Anyway, following Larry's advic...
