Re: Dual Boot system boots straight into Windows 10

Hi Kurogane,

I’m sorry that none of my ideas worked for you. There is nothing else I can suggest I’m afraid. BIOS settings are way above my league, not helped by your machine being UEFI.

I wish you luck and hope that you can get where you want to be.

Re: Dual Boot system boots straight into Windows 10

I’m sorry if I was unclear. What I meant was just open a terminal and type the command. Anyway, the output you have listed is what I was asking for so one way or another you got there. Well done. The entry ‘GRUB_DEFAULT=0’ is the boot order. Changing the ‘0’ to ‘1’ should put the second OS, Mint, as...

Re: One installation across two computers

Just had a new thought on my previous thought.

Could the issue of the /home directory on two computers be resolved by giving access via a fstab entry? I am wondering if the fstab entries on both computers point to the same partition? Does fstab work like that cross a LAN?

Re: One installation across two computers

Hmm. I did wonder.

Two operating systems pose their own problems though don't they. Even if both machines have an OS I cannot see a way, using the installation manager, of putting the /home directory from one machine into the OS of another.

Re: Dual Boot system boots straight into Windows 10

The GRUB menu should appear if you press and hold Shift during the time when Grub should be loading. Use this if you boot using BIOS. If your system boots using UEFI, press Esc. Don’t worry if you are unsure when GRUB is actually loading. Boot into Mint in whatever way you can then make changes as d...

One installation across two computers

I have acquired two of those little desktop computers that only have room for one physical hard drive. Each machine has plenty of space to partition up the drives so I could split up an installation any way I wanted and install a separate OS on each. However, this would mean keeping the /home direct...

Re: A beginners questions about Python

Thank you xenopeek.

I had forgotten the EOL for 18.3. I was always happy with gedit but stopped using it when xed came along. I’ll go back to that and stop worrying unnecessarily

Problem solved Whoopee!

SOLVED A beginners questions about Python

Hi all, I have decided to jump in and learn Python. I installed it without any problem but find that it is version 3.5 while the current Python version is 3.8. I am running Mint 18.3 Cinnamon 64 bit. So a couple of questions. Question 1. Is it worthwhile updating to the current version of Python and...

Re: LibreOffice Calc guidance

Now they ARE old. They were for my 64k Commodore Pet. I neve...

Re: LO Calc calculations

My inexperience in database design is the main reason I am using Calc first. I have designed a couple of small data bases but this will be a bigger project. I have, though, done a fair bit or reading up on design but putting into practice on this scale will be a new experience for me. And yes, I do ...

Re: LibreOffice Calc guidance

I am still leaning about both spreadsheet and database design. They are both huge subjects, each in its own right. That is not meant to put you off either though. Yes, there is a vast amount of information and advice ‘out there’. The trouble I always find is that what you want to know is not exactly...

Re: LO Calc calculations

Your supposition is correct, lsemmens. The plan is to gather all the data into a spreadsheet and once that is finalised create a database from it. I am not very familiar with DB design so thought it best to have all the fields (columns) that are needed for the DB tables before sitting down and creat...

Re: LO Calc calculations

To clarify. Here is an image of what I have at present image_02.jpg The code in cell N9 is =IF(M9="","",DATEVALUE(K9 & "/" & L9 & "/" & M9)) As the day number is missing from cell K9 the output I would like in cell N9 would be “May 1872” If K9 actually contained a number, for argument sake 2 but the...

Re: LO Calc calculations

Thanks for the suggestion JoeFootball. My examples were incomplete in as much as I way already using an ‘if’ function to prevent a whole pile of errors in rows where data had not yet been entered. It is a version of the ‘if’ function I use a lot. e.g. =IF(M7="","",DATEVALUE(K7 & "/" & L7 & "/" & M7)...

LO Calc calculations

I am working on a large Calc spreadsheet for a client that contains a lot of historical data concerning a small village school, the original documentation for which originates from the 1880s and carries on through until at least the 1990s. The source documents have columns that contain the dates pup...

Re: Considerations multi booting on an SSD

I am still reading through this post https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=30623 as well as the links it contains. By all accounts, Fred was a genius. (Probably still is, just no longer active here.) That thread is ten years old. Should not be relied on for anything. As for the Firefox ...

Re: 19.2 Firefox wrong version

Thank you for the background Karl. As you say many ways lead to Rome. In my case I do not actually want to run FF on the 19.2 machine as a primary machine. The 18.3 machine is my primary one and the whole purpose of the exercise, as indicated in my other post, was to check software and file compatib...

Re: Considerations multi booting on an SSD

The heading I chose for this post was “Considerations multi booting on an SSD” I have discovered that one of the considerations is that I cannot use Firefox in the way that I have always done. Please see my post at https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=305969&p=1719121#p1719121 That post...
