Re: Installing MATE on LM 20
Hooray! Installing Mate from Synaptic, then activating the chooser on login, worked perfectly. There seems to be no conflict. Thanks again.

Re: Installing MATE on LM 20
Thanks Schultz and hans123. I'll try installing from Synaptic and, when that inevitably fails, wait for 20.0 and do a new install.

Installing MATE on LM 20
I'm using the XFCE desktop (I'm hopelessly inept with computers) and, if possible, I'd like to switch to MATE. I have downloaded it from Synaptic. What now?

Timeshift Size
I just installed 19 Beta. The timeshift folder created is some 13G. That seems like too big, and I can't afford it on my modest HD. Am I doing something wrong in the setup?

live boot -- id and password -- SOLVED
I installed Linuxmint 17.1 Cinnamon to a USB drive with the "dd" command from Linuxmint 17.0 and booted. I got a login screen. What username and password can I use to get in. Altenatively, what can I add to the kernel line to get in automatically? Thanks again, this time for real. I put Li...

Install Without Bootloader
I'd like to install Mint 15, but I don't want to install the booltoader (I'll add Mint to my existing Grub 1 bootloader). There doesn't seem to be a way to bypass the bootloader, however. Can someone give me a workaround?

Re: Bootloader installation failed...
As a side note, I installed Mint 14 yesterday, the bootloader failed, and I was delighted. I already have several Linux distributions on two hard drives. I was worried that the new bootloader woudln't catch them all. So I was able to add Mint 14 to the GRUB 1 bootloader on the primary drive (GRUB 1 ...

Re: What oses yall running?
I have Windows XP on a SATA drive (the used computer came with that), and Mint 12 KDE, Quelitu, and several Puppy versions in frugal install on a smaller IDE HD. Then I have CentOS on a USB. I guess I'm just a junkie. I do like this Mint, however; I have been playing with it for several days with no...

SOLVED: (Installed Gnome-alsa and all was well) I ran alsamixer and the masters were set to "MM," which I guess is mute, but I don't know how to toggle them. Please help.

Network Printing
I'm trying out Mint 11 (XFDE edition) on a USB drive. Everything works, but when I try to set up my printer on a wired network: The wizard finds my HD Photosmart 4680 printer and verifies it. I find the correct driver and click "apply" I get the message that the installation failed, with t...

Installing without CD
I'd like to try Mint XFCE, but I have a rather strange problem: My CD drive broke and I attached a portable (SONY) drive attached to a USB port. The drive does everything else, but it won't boot, and my BIOS won't accomodate a boot from USB. Is there any way, having unpacked the iso to a directory o...

Re: cant burn dvd's
I have always had trouble with Brasero; it doesn't recognize my cd's (any brand) and says I don't have enough room on the (empty) disk. Try installing K3b. It works for me.

Brasero Can't Read My Blank CD's
I just installed mint 10. It's great, but I have come across a strange problem: When I attempt to use Brasero, I get the message that the CD doesn't have enough space. The Properties tab registers the CD space as zero, but I can use the same CD's to burn with other operating systems, including Linux...

Re: When does a machine become "self aware"
This question was definitively answered in the 1930's by a man named Turing, who in effect invented the modern computer with his theoretical Turing Machine. Way back then he was asked when computers would have to be considered conscious, and he proposed The Turing Test. I can't explain the nature of...

Privileges for network folders
I just installed Mint 9 XFCE. Everything seems to work. However, I need to change the Grub menu.lst file in another partition (it boots both Mint and another Linux OS), and I'm told I don't have privileges. I'm the first user, and I'm listed as being administrator. How do I access this file with rw ...

Re: Goodbye Linux : (
If you want a light, easy OS that just works, I recommend you try Puppy. There are many versions, and most of them are about 100M. I'm a recent convert to Mint, but I still use several Puppy versions.
