Re: I'd like to ask why

What is different between Hexchat and all other default apps on Mint 20? Based on your description, hexchat remembers its position and restores itself when it's next started. Every application that doesn't do this is due to developers not having a feel for what users need. I say this because I am a...

Re: I'm 47 and new to Linux.

Hey, thanks! I do have a gmail account. I feel like I'm hyper paranoid coming from windows and using google anything to transfer files to Linux. I basically want to create a new identity on Linux and given the fingerprinting and bs big tech is up to, coupled with my complete ignorance, it wo...

I'd like to ask why

I'm using the Mint 20.1, cinnamon edition. Hexchat opens in the same place it was when I closed it, but none of the other apps do so.. the others all open center screen. Why? What is different between Hexchat and all other default apps on Mint 20? I tried to change settings for opening windows but t...

Re: I'm 47 and new to Linux.

Welp...I am good and ready to pull my Houdini act from big tech. The only thing I know is Linux Mint is as close to windows as possible in user experience/simplicity, except with a whole new glossary of terms (oh yeay). I'm using Windows 10 with Brave and TOR Browsers, ExpressVPN and have about 2gi...

Can someone please comment on why we now have snaps (or Flatpack or Appimage) in Linux?
Because someone comes up with an idea that they think should apply to everyone everywhere?

Re: Video creation software options

Another recommendation for Shotcut, it's a very nice video editor. If, for some reason, that doesn't fit the task perfectly, you can also try Kdenlive or Openshot.

Re: No hardware acceleration with AMD RADEON RX 5500XT

I am using the 5.4.0-65-generic kernel and inxi is showing my driver as amdgpu. My video card is: AMD Radeon RX 570 Series. So, am I correct in assuming that the 5.4 kernel does have the amdgpu driver? They are all called amdgpu, but that does not mean the version of amdgpu that you have is the sam...

Re: No hardware acceleration with AMD RADEON RX 5500XT

Ok so I booted to a live session with my installation media and inxi -Gx still showed the graphics card driver as "N/A." Does this mean that this is a problem with my graphics card? There is an issue with the card being recognized and the driver installing during boot. That could be an is...

Re: How to rid myself of flatpak?

Linux Mint 20.4 I went to install the Atom editor and the Software Manager installed using flatpak. This makes it a huge pain to run from the command line. Worse still, it's even harder to run Atom's package manager from the command line. (If I wanted GUI launches for the sake of GUI, I'd flee to i...

Re: [Solved] Remove Old Kernels

I removed about 6 GB of kernels from /. That was quite a slog. mintupdate reports: Currently using kernel 4.4.0-200 Installed: kernel 4.4.0-197 kernel 4.4.0-198 kernel 4.4.0-200 in use kernel 4.4.0-21 What was the original kernel for 18.0 Cinnamon? #2 If I want to upload an image (for example) to imgur, the only folder Linux/MATE will allow me to browse is Downloads! Any other folder is simply unavailable to get to. :?:
Are you getting a "permission denied" issue when attempting to open a folder in your Home directory?

No "Remove" button, just "Install"
That's because you're looking at a kernel that is not yet installed. Installed kernels will show the word "installed" in the center of the kernel button.

Linuxmint 18.0 Cinnamon. How do I remove old kernels? I went to Update Manager > View > clicked on a kernel. All that appears is Bug Reports, Changelog, CVG Tracker and install. How do I remove the kernel? Update Manager > View > Linux Kernels and Continue through the warning. In the kernels window...

Re: No hardware acceleration with AMD RADEON RX 5500XT

So an update. I tried updating to 20.1 which did not solve the issue. So then I went to reinstall Mint 20 with my USB drive and format the drive however this did not cause the problem to go away strangely enough, even after installing updates (not to 20.1). I wonder if this is a hardware or ISO ima...

Ah, thank you.. I didn't know that. It used to be an option, glad they're installing it all now.

Setting up the new version of Thunderbird for email isn't the problem. It's getting TB to show my google calendar. How do I do that? Re: No hardware acceleration with AMD RADEON RX 5500XT

I tried the AMD Pro drivers from the AMD site months ago and they weren't any help. I've done a clean install since then. So your saying that to fix your problem you reinstalled the same version of Mint and formatted your drive and the problem was mysteriously fixed? No, I never experienced a probl...

Re: how to copy file and preserve its date stamp?

This is the way I understand it: Created timestamp is when the OS created this instance of the file in the file system and the OS will not allow it to be changed. This timestamp can be later than "modified" and there is no contradiction. If the file was copied after it was modified then t...
