Re: the security of PPAs and KeePassXC in particular

Hello everyone, for my limited understanding of PPAs, its basically a different source for updates other than Ubuntu and Mint, where other users or the creators of a particular program can publish their updates through. My question is, how can you check at least a little, if these PPAs are safe? Fo...

Re: the security of PPAs and KeePassXC in particular

I always recommend to stick with the default repos unless one has a good reason not to. KeepassXC is in the default repos for Linux Mint.. no need to mess with a PPA.

I've been using Linux Mint since Maya (Linux Mint 13 in 2012) and I don't remember ever using any of those commands. Hmm, shows how trustworthy those "do these first" videos are.

Re: Linux mint cinnamon and xfce question

What is the best desktop enviroment then? The one that works for you on your chosen hardware. Some people don't even use a desktop environment, some use one of the many window managers; Fluxbox, Awesome, WindowMaker, OpenBox, Rat Poison, AfterStep, FVWM, etc. Stand-alone window managers are typical...

Re: Linux mint cinnamon and xfce question

If I dont like it I would just leave it installed and just use cinnamon then no risk of removing it yes it would use some hdd space but my hdd is 1tb and Im only using about 40 percent of it. In that case the only other risk would be a lot of redundant apps; two text editors, two file browsers, etc...

Re: Linux mint cinnamon and xfce question

Effects doesnt do much at all. The question remains is adding xfce safe, do able, and are there any risk to doing it? It would be a lot less work and risk by downloading the Mint XFCE edition and running the live environment from a USB stick to try it out. If you install it along side Cinnamon and ...

LM 20.3 I have been trying to disable "Sign in with Google" popup. Going to my Google account and making changes doesn't work. Looking at other options thinking Duckduckgo is owned by Google no to that. Even changed my search engine, no help there. Firefox does have a Popup blocker, and i...

Re: Simplest way to encrypt a file on a desktop ?

This may just be me, but I would not trust a "save with password" option until I knew how the protection was being implemented. Good to know. Encryption algorithm in LO is set by ODF standard which is in its latest version uses AES-256. The same algorithm is used by GnuPG, PGP, VeraCrypt,...

Re: Simplest way to encrypt a file on a desktop ?

To be clear, I meant the Save with password option (not GPG). And, sure, that's encrypted. This may just be me, but I would not trust a "save with password" option until I knew how the protection was being implemented. Is it a known and secure encryption algorithm or method like GPG and A...

Re: Are Nested Data Folder Expander Triangles Gone in LM 21.2 OS?

I have one PC running an old Cinnamon LM 19 OS and another PC running the newest Cinnamon LM 21.2 OS. Much to my disappointment I noticed today a NEMO v5.2.4 feature I liked very much is no longer available in the NEMO v5.8.5 used in LM 21.2 OS. I'm talking about what I call the "Nested Data F...

simplemost Look at ccrypt (repository) for very secure situations Instructions are like: ccrypt <insert path to that file or directory> Make sure to remember the passphrase. Look at the depth of the encryption. Simple Cryptography enthusiast here. I have been looking at ccrypt ever since LPH mentio...

Re: Simplest way to encrypt a file on a desktop ?

Is it actually Notesnook? Yes it is. Perhaps it is not in the 21.2 repository, but it is in the 20.3 repository. Just done a check on a 21.2 laptop and YES, it is there. Sorry about that as the previous two computers checked were pre 21 installations i.e. didn't show on the 20.3 desktop. Notesnook ...

To add a right-click in nemo to encrypt or/and decrypt a single file ... Hope that helps. If I've missed/messed up something, comment here and I'll see if I can address it. Regards The encrypt.sh and decrypt.sh scripts could benefit from error handling. Otherwise it's too easy to encrypt/decrypt wi...
