Re: motion CCTV

Well I've been playing about with motion and now have the webcam reacting to movement. Unfortunately, the output JPG files are black/blank. I'm using Mint 19, 64 bit and motion 4.1.1-1 with a simple (old) webcam. With cheese the picture is fine, fed through the USB port. My motion.conf file reads as...

Re: motion CCTV

Thanks Flemur. I'll persevere a bit longer and if all else fails it's nice you can just roll back in time. :)

I'll let you know how I get on.

motion CCTV

I've been using motion for my CCTV at home for many years now, without any problems. Earlier this week, after coming home from a week away, I found the system had stopped working. It looks like we've been "upgraded" to a new version. I've gone to the MAN pages and found a new list of commands/attrib...

Re: [SOLVED] Linux Mint 19 very slow boot times of ten minutes or so.

Linux is an ideal OS to run on old, if not ancient hardware and, because of that it is brilliant on newer gear too. As can be seen from this little debacle, where a simple edit in the grub made all the difference. Perhaps, for a laugh, we should try Windows 10 on a ten year old computer. Anyhow, I d...

Re: [Solved] Open as Administrator in Caja

Guess What? I've just rebooted and yes, apt install --reinstall caja-admin worked and everything is back to normal. Thank you gm10 and because of this I've now placed [Solved] up.

It is a shame Caja isn't installed this way in the Mint 19 Upgrade.

Re: Open as Administrator in Caja

Well I've had a sort of success, thanks to Flemur , as I've added a file called OpenAsAdministrator in the .config/caja/scripts directory . This file included the following:- #!/bin/sh gksu caja $NAUTILUS_SCRIPT_CURRENT_URI This file was saved in the above directory and the Permissions to run it as ...

[Solved] Open as Administrator in Caja

I've noticed in Linux Mint 19 there is no, " Open as Administrator " whenever you right click on a Folder now in Caja. This was a very simple way of doing Elevated Tasks in a GUI. Yes, I know we should learn to use the Terminal and I have done so for the task I had in hand but, I cannot find how to ...

Re: [SOLVED] Linux Mint 19 very slow boot times of ten minutes or so.

As you can now see, I've updated my entries accordingly. (I found the solution on a different thread and did the necessary there and forgot I should do likewise here.) Anyway, the job is done and I'm cooking on Gas!

Re: slow boot with tara...?

by charroo » Wed Jul 18, 2018 3:21 pm I’ve a relatively new laptop but Tara boots slower than Sylvia, why? By slow, how slow do you mean? My old Dell Latitude D630 (2008 vintage) was slowing down in Mint 18.3 but when Mint 19 came on the scene slowed down to >6 minutes. Once running Mint 18.3 again...

Re: Slow Boot

Good news at last . I've just tried the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash video=SVIDEO-1:d" edit in my GRUB file and my Dell Latitude D630 which, after installing the 4.15.0-29 kernel slowed my Mint 18.3 boot time right down to > 6 minutes. Application of this edit has changed the boot ...

Re: Linux Mint 19 very slow boot times of ten minutes or so.

Now running on the 4.15.0-29 and have a cold metal to GUI (including manual Log in) of <1 minute on my ten year old lump. I will wait for the upgrade to Mint 19 via the Update Manager. Thanks everyone for your help. :) :) :) In case you too are suffering a similar problem, here is what I did. 1. I e...

Re: Linux Mint 19 very slow boot times of ten minutes or so.

Wow! Modified my GRUB with the line starting GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= now reads GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash video=SVIDEO-1:d" That even improved the start up time of my current kernel (4.13) with the Hard Disk working continuously unlike the fits and starts before. I will now try upd...

Re: Linux Mint 19 very slow boot times of ten minutes or so.

:( Warning the 4.15 series Linux Kernel doesn't like old Hardware :( I've been happily using Mint 18.3, since dumping Mint 19 because of the horrendous boot time, then Update Manager installed the 4.15 kernel today. This slowed my boot time right down, just like Mint 19. I've now removed and blackl...

Re: Linux Mint 19 very slow boot times of ten minutes or so.

I must admit, I've surrendered and gone back to LinuxMint 18.2 which still has the 30 second delay before Plymouth starts but at least gets its binary bits into gear after that. The six + minutes of Mint 19 is far too long and for me, playing with kernels makes no difference. I think there is a prob...

Re: Slow Boot

My sympathies with everyone with slow booting in Linux Mint 19 (all desktops) 64 and 32 bit. My old Dell Latitude D630 which used to boot in <60 seconds now takes >6 minutes today. Changing the Kernel makes no difference (only different Error messages). from GRUB start to Plymouth screen takes 70 od...

Re: Linux Mint 19 very slow boot times of ten minutes or so.

Hi gm10 Sorry about the confusion over that kernel, looking at those deb packages, they installed the 24 kernel again! Anyway, now running on 4.15.0-23 and 4.15.0-24 is blacklisted. Output for inxi -Fxz is... System: Host: woods-laptop Kernel: 4.15.0-23-generic x86_64 bits: 64 gcc: 7.3.0 Desktop: MA...

Re: Linux Mint 19 very slow boot times of ten minutes or so.

I've had a look at my grub file... # If you change this file, run 'update-grub' afterwards to update # /boot/grub/grub.cfg. # For full documentation of the options in this file, see: # info -f grub -n 'Simple configuration' GRUB_DEFAULT=0 GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0 GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true GRUB_TI...

Okay. On mains power and did the instructions from JeremyB 1. Switch to earlier Kernel on reboot 2. Removed Linux Kernel 4.15.0-24 3. Saved to /Downloads to following deb files http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp ... g4_all.deb http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~jsalisbury/lp ... _amd64.deb http://kernel...

Hey, back from the shops! I've tried all of the list below, bar changing the kernel. Here is System D the list of shame, I mean blame......
