Re: Make the Installation Slideshow Optional

I think that this is quite a worthwhile suggestion, as the problem with the slide show is not all that infrequent. A couple months ago it happened to me as I tried to upgrade my wife's desktop PC (it still had Mint 7!) I gave up trying to install Mint 14 Mate on it and put Mint 9 on it instead. A fe...

Re: 32 or 64 bit?

A major consideration can also be compatibility with other software or hardware that will be installed. Twice I have had to uninstall 64-bit systems and re-install the 32-bit versions because the printers attached to the PC's had only 32-bit drivers (both were Lexmark and a real pain in the ass.)

Re: Mint 13 LTS iso update and ubuntu 12.04.2

No, I think that the point of this request (and several other identical ones in the past) is that the LTS version of Mint is still being recommended by Clem, and consequently is still being downloaded and installed by users. There are a tremendous number of updates for that original Mint 13 version;...

Re: PAE Kernel

It is unfortunate for the users that are unlucky enough to have gotten non-PAE hardware in the past; only a select few Pentium M models don't have PAE, and all other x86 processors introduced since 1995 have PAE. That doesn't help you of course, so see the linked topic for help  I don't belie...

Re: Global menu (appmenu) in Cinnamon?

Don't try to read too much into a simple comment about prefernces. As was mentioned before, all it takes for Cinnamon to have a global menu option is for someone to write an applet for it. That's how Cinnamon has gotten nearly all its options so far, and how future functionality will be created for ...

Re: Cinnamon to be default in Mint 13?

I fear it will be MATE. Please no. Ugh Why all the animosity towards Mate? (Not just this thread, but in a lot of threads in the forum.) Gnome 2 was very popular - the most popular of all the desktops - and Mate is simply Gnome 2 repackaged. It's not as though a substandard desktop environment is s...

Re: If you had ONE request for the Cinnamon devs what would

I'd like Cinnamon to have its own "fallback" mode for machines that don't have adequate 3D graphics cards. Of my four PCs, three have ATI cards (perfectly good graphics, but they just don't work well under Gnome 3) and the other has an old VIA graphics adapter.

Re: "What does Cinnamon bring...?"

And now I have the proof that we are right and the rest are wrong: http://www.linuxjournal.com/slideshow/readers-choice-2011?page=44 That should stir up a hornet's nest  Keep in mind that this award was made by the same people that named Ubuntu the "best Linux distribtion" last year despite it...

Re: Problem with Simple File Sharing [SOLVED]

Thanks. I made those changes, and it looks like everything is working great. The three partitions show up in the Places section of Nautilus, and they even have icons on the desktop. And I didn't have to change my download directory after all, since you had me move it back to being mounted under /med...

Re: Problem with Simple File Sharing

Thanks, I'll try that. If I create those new mount points, will I need to delete the old ones? And, if so, do I do that first or later?

Re: Problem with Simple File Sharing

Thanks. I did that (mounted Data) and all three showed up under the Network in Nautilus. I set the sharing options on them and rebooted. All are shared now across my network, and that's great, but now this has introduced another problem - although I can now easily get to these drives from other comp...

Re: Problem with Simple File Sharing

Oops! That didn't work. After rebooting, I can't get to those drives/partitions at all. They aren't listed in Nautilus either in Computer (like they were before) or in the Network. I can't find them in order to establish the sharing permissions. Perhaps you help me back out of those changes.

Re: Problem with Simple File Sharing

Once again, thanks. I appreciate the help. The file sharing issue I could live with, since now I realize what it is and how to overcome it, but the other issue (with the same cause) is really more important. This is the computer that my wife uses, and she wouldn't remember to remember to click on th...

Re: Problem with Simple File Sharing

Thanks for the quick response. Yes, I shared them as sudo, and they did actually work - I was able to play videos on my laptop from the hard drive in my desktop PC. The net command gave me: $ sudo net usershare info info_fn: file /var/lib/samba/usershares/stored data is not a well formed usershare f...

Problem with Simple File Sharing [SOLVED]

I have a small home network (one Mint PC, one Ubuntu laptop, and one Windows XP machine), over which I store and share a lot of data, mostly multimedia files. From the two Linux PC's, I have no trouble accessing the shared data on the Windows PC, but the reverse is not true - I can't easily share th...
