Re: Getting Openvpn to connect at startup

Well, Openvpn was already enabled and I could connect to the VPN manually. :) In the end, I went through pages and different solutions and none of them really worked! Probably because some of them were for different distros, or things had changed enough and I didn't have enough knowledge to understa...

Re: Questions about Defragging or Antivirus? Look here first

Hmm, I'm gonna look into either avast, Clamav or F-prot then.

Sure, Linux is safe but at times, I do transfer files to my parents' laptops and err, they really are very bad with computers. They didn't even have any anti-virus installed for a long time on each of their laptops!

Re: firefox in mint 14 is a bad idea

Hmm, it's so much faster for me than on Windows(on this pc and someone elses').

However, it does get kinda really slow when viewing History.

Getting Openvpn to connect at startup

Getting Openvpn to connect at startup on Linux Mint 14 xfce(fresh install, less than 48 hours old): I'm trying to get Openvpn to run at startup. "Connect automatically" is checked but no deal. I've since tried this command but to no success. Yes, there're symlinks between /etc/init.d/openv...

Re: Booting Mint as an operating system from an image?

I read through the whole thing many times but isn't it simply about storing the settings on the usb stick(instead of storing them in an image)? I thought Linux was a pretty rigid thing and you can't just modify any of the settings, unlike Windows? Your words have actually left me ten times more conf...

Re: Booting Mint as an operating system from an image?

To richyrich: thanks but I didn't even know what I was looking for. I actually looked through hundreds of links before I gave up. But I'm not looking for booting from a usb. Now I recall, it was Wolvix and I mounted an image and then loaded the settings from it. Still, whatever... I think I'll try L...

Booting Mint as an operating system from an image?

Okay, now this may confuse a lot of people but a long long time ago, I recalled being able to boot a certain Linux distro from an image. And that image was exactly like some sort of hard disk. Now, I can't recall whether you can do that with Mint? I am not talking about booting from a virtual machin...

Getting a new system ready: just some qns to ask

Hi, I'll be getting a new system ready as it seems core i7 will take at least a full year before prices become affordable for the consumers. I've already worked out all the parts I want and now, I'm trying to put together a software compatibility list. My list: e8400/Biostar tpower i45/1 to 2 Sata h...

Re: Usage of Ext3 partition by Windows

Well, thanks for the info, I'll likely continue as I am now - using FAT32 partitions on my main & external HDDs for most storage, accessing my Ext3 /home partition from Windows only occasionally, and only to read files. Not ideal, but what to do... The alternatives don't look great either. pb Y...

Re: Any other distros to recommend?

I will repeat what a few have said already and recommend Debian Etch.. I'm sure there is going to be a rather easy solution to the problem you are having with your HD; I just hope you find it sooner rather than later. There's the jumper solution but my hdd is already set in Single mode so no, it do...

Re: Any other distros to recommend?

Can't recognize an IDE hd???? Come on.............those things have been around for hundreds of years. Something is not hooked up right. Is it recognized by the bios? Are the jumpers on the hd set correctly? (either cable/select or master) Is it plugged in to the last plug on the ribbon? Is the rib...

Re: Usage of Ext3 partition by Windows

Hi I do not really think you need to check it that often, its not a m$ file system :) But there are some good hints and howtos here: http://users.bigpond.net.au/hermanzone/p10.htm Also look at "man fsck" in terminal will tell you a lot (use down arrow on keyboard to read all) Nick Well, t...

Any other distros to recommend?

So now, I've realised that Daryna has inherited some issues from Gutsy meaning both will refuse to recognise my IDE hdd so these 2 distros are out of consideration. Does anyone have a distro to recommend, that's similar to Mint but with no Kde? Yeah, Kde's fast but with the exception of a few, the g...

Re: Is my hardware failing?

A suggestion: RMA it. Yeah, it's become apparent over the last couple of days that this is the fastest way to get my desktop back to normal. After running Seatools to completely wipe the drive, I haven't been able to reformat and partition it. When I get back from class/work today, I plan to take o...

Re: Usage of Ext3 partition by Windows

Can anyone tell me how to do a manual check of a Ext3 volume? Occasionally I'll get an automatic check when booting, but with the dangers of accessing from Windows I'd like to make sure things are ok. Sorry for the newbie-ish question. pb Sorry, can't help you with that. I recall there was a progra...

Re: Yet another login issue

I haven't had the time to come back to you until now - or you have not posted for a while - mostly one days worth of my posts cover a page.... I think this is getting a bit dangerous - you may destroy more than you cure in your search for a solution. The only real test now is to disconnect the disk...

From Ubuntu forums: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=586894 I am a new linux user and I too have been getting the "disk drive not detected" error during installation. In another thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=617929 ChrisBieda suggested changing the jumper on the W...

Re: Yet another login issue

By the dancing bananas, I've already reformatted and converted all my ext3 partitions on my internal hdds to ntfs.

Still, no joy: meaning, I'm still stuck at the booting screen. :/

Re: Usage of Ext3 partition by Windows

The thing that sucks with mounting a NTFS partition is that files you delete from the mounted partition don't reach the trash bin on your desktop. Instead it ends up in a .trash folder on the partition you tried deleting it from. You have to manually delete this folder to actually delete your files...
