As you said I needed to solve it quickly, so I used the big hammer and just reinstalled Mint.
Thinking about it, I should have checked using the live CD first.

Just deleted it and reinstalled for about the tenth time and its back to the right size!!!! .

Kde resumes its place as the foxiest desktop.

Its the one with the network manager.
I can't remember how I got it to resize, I think I was just moving it at the time.

I've tried adjusting all the settings I can find, but nothing works.
I can move the tray but not resize it. If I delete it and reinstall, it just fills all the available space again.

Its a minor irritant but I'd like to try and fix it.
