ALT+TAB to select desktop?

When I use ALT+TAB to toggle through open windows there isn't an option for the desktop like in windows 7 I was running a full screen game with no other windows open and I wanted to get back to the desktop. ALT+TAB was no use because the desktop was not an option to cycle to. I tried the windows but...

Re: Why do new people give up on Linux?

I have given up on Linux several times in the past. I first tried Ubuntu back when windows vista was a thing. I saw a video showing off Compiz and I thought it looked really cool. The novelty soon wore off when I realised that I couldn't install programs as easily, and many programs I like simply ar...

Re: copy paste of images not working

I never knew you could do that in windows. I always dragged the file from the folder into the chat bar to send it over Skype.
I have not tried Skype on mint yet, so I have no idea if that works here either.

Re: Setting GPU Execution Cap

I'm also a Planet Coaster player, but I have Nvidia graphics. On windows, if I minimized the game it would slow the GPU usage right down as if it were running in the background. When running it using Proton it just runs flat out even when minimized. This makes multitasking quite sluggish. Firefox wi...

Re: Trying to update NVidia driver, World of Warcraft issues

Addendum: Still trying to find a way to install the new NVidia 455.28 video driver onto my system. It doesn't show up yet on the Driver Manager or Update Manager. I went to the official NVidia site and downloaded the driver which left a file on my desktop called "NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-455.28.run" But...

Re: [SOLVED] Mint 20 totally locks up, generally unstable and various oddities

Terminal command india -Fxz|grep -i temp will give the temperature. Please copy paste it. Thanks for that, it will come in handy. I have been going to the system reports window to find the CPU temp and the Nvidia X server settings for the GPU temps. I was hoping to find an overlay that displays on ...

Re: [SOLVED] Mint 20 totally locks up, generally unstable and various oddities

It is probable that the overclocking made the system hotter and thus the fans ran more. You could check in Nvidia X Server Settings to see what fan and/or temperature controls are there. There might also be settings related to your FPS, but I'm not sure. I know some gaming platforms have options on...

Re: [SOLVED] Mint 20 totally locks up, generally unstable and various oddities

Glad you got the screen tearing fixed. The more I looked into the Nvidia files and what is being done with the current packages the less capable I felt in being able to help you. It's seems best to assume what you have is correct since it appears to be working. I'm inclined to agree with you. Every...

Re: [SOLVED] Mint 20 totally locks up, generally unstable and various oddities

I just wanted to say a thanks to everyone who contributed in this thread. It has been a few days without a single lock up, so I have marked this thread as solved. I also found a solution to the screen tearing in Firefox. It seems that the "use hardware acceleration" option in the settings does nothi...

Re: Mint 20 totally locks up, generally unstable and various oddities

Yes I can open the Nvidia x server settings, and both my GTX 970 cards are showing. I was having trouble with it forgetting my settings when I quit out of the window. Under "x server display configuration" I read that enabling "Force Full Composition Pipeline" will fix the screen tearing, but Firefo...

Re: Mint 20 totally locks up, generally unstable and various oddities

I wanted to install steam and try running some games, and I did get Planet Coaster to run, but again after a few minutes the whole pc locked up. I tried downgrading the graphics driver from 450 to 390, but Planet coaster wouldn't load because it said it couldn't find DirectX. I upgraded the driver ...

Re: Mint 20 totally locks up, generally unstable and various oddities

I have no idea if I installed the OS in legacy or EFI mode. I just booted from the usb drive, then when I got to the desktop I clicked the install linux mint icon. I then picked the option that formats and erases everything. It then runs through keyboard set up and time zone settings and made me nam...

Re: Mint 20 totally locks up, generally unstable and various oddities

In the Grub bootloader menu, select Advanced and then boot from the latest 5.4 kernel. Then you can remove the 5.8. Phew, Thanks. Sorry for being such a noob. I think I have removed it now. When I did have the 5.8 Kernel I get a message on boot 0.116880] x86/cpu: VMX (outside TXT) disabled by BIOS ...

Re: Mint 20 totally locks up, generally unstable and various oddities

So are you saying to try 5.8.0-22 (Unsupported)? Yes. As the 5.8 kernel series isn't present in the official repo's yet, but still only in a PPA, it's of course unofficial and unsupported. ok so I applied 5.8.0-22 and rebooted. As soon as I opened firefox the computer locked up. I forced shu...

Re: Mint 20 totally locks up, generally unstable and various oddities

No. It should switch to a virtual console. And in there, you can give commands. Here's one that's easy to remember: reboot That way, at least you don't have to do a hard shutdown. If you can get there, of course. Thanks for the tip, I don't hold out much hope of it working, but hopefully it will co...

Re: Mint 20 totally locks up, generally unstable and various oddities

Thanks for the reply, I will give your suggestions a try. I must admit I didn't verify the ISO before installing it, smacked wrists. So I downloaded it again and followed the steps to verify it. Everything checked out good so I popped it on the USB Stick for a reinstall tomorrow if I can't figure ou...
