resolved ... I just had to let the old 32bit LMDE boot as normal and then type that detected the LMDE5 and added to the menu. rebooted all sorted.

Can you install LMDE5 on a non EUFI (enabled) system? The live disk/installer boots and runs fine on the unit, but when I go to install it I want to dual boot for now with the LMDE3 already on there. btw Shame there is no install into free space option in this scenario. I updated with [WORKEDAROUND], the issue of why LMDE3 after having had 3+Gb for couple of years suddenly deciding it only thought it had 1Gb while BIOS and MemTest86 and LMDE4 confirmed presence of 4Gb chip was not solved as such.

gave up. did fresh install of LMDE4 all working, full RAM now seen by inxi and system.
