Re: Timeshift and the Settings

All I wanted to know if there is a way to see how much space the snapshots actually take? It's odd that the Timeshift program doesn't tell you that. EDIT3: Ok, found Disk Usage Analyzer that seems to show the actual space taken by snapshots. 5 snapshots take 18,7 GB. I'm fine with that now. I guess ...

Re: Timeshift and the Settings

I tried to figure out what schedule settings would make sense and ended up with 1 monthly, 2 weekly & 3 daily snapshots. Fast forward a bit, I ended up here and read that 2 monthly snapshots is enough. I have no experience with this but for some reason I feel like it would make sense to make sna...

Re: Driver Manager - notification of new available driver versions?

Oh, sorry, I misunderstood. Keeping this short; it's just easier for my usage patterns to use only nvidia, that's why I disabled intel. Thanks for the help, appreciated.

Re: Driver Manager - notification of new available driver versions?

I have tested in linux and windows, it's not possible. I also have googled and confirmed this from various places/topics, e.g. https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Gaming-Lap ... -p/4625846

Re: Driver Manager - notification of new available driver versions?

If everything is set up properly, I believe you do not have to switch to Nvidia in the BIOS to be able to get the external monitor to work. However, I can not say for sure given I do not know the specifics of your equipment. This is confirmed, it's not possible with this laptop, only nvidia can out...

Re: Driver Manager - notification of new available driver versions?

You see the green, highlighted recommended---- and many people probably automatically think, okay, I need to install this right away because the people who created this OS are telling me that is what needs to be done. Exactly! Just because this driver manager is coming from Ubuntu, it's still a pro...

Re: Driver Manager - notification of new available driver versions?

Some laptops require extra boot commands to properly work with power management, certain function keys and display brightness control. Below is a guide from an Arch based operating system. The same applies to Ubuntu based operating systems too, so you can transfer the knowledge here: https://endeav...

Re: Driver Manager - notification of new available driver versions?

Positive, Cinnamon 4.6.7 Ok. That's interesting. I do have dual graphics, the Intel is just disabled from bios because I can't output anything through it to external monitor (I don't understand what Lenovo was thinking with that decision, my older and cheaper Acer, with Intel+Nvidia was able to out...

Re: Driver Manager - notification of new available driver versions?

Mint Cinnamon did exactly that with my laptop before it became a 5 year old paperweight recently. It had Intel graphics though, not an nvidia card. I could set separate brightness levels for battery or mains power and it also dimmed when inactive after a configurable period. Thanks for the tip and ...

Re: Driver Manager - notification of new available driver versions?

Screen brightness for battery can be configured by going Menu -- Preferences --> Power Management --> Brightness There is not a setting that would set the brightness automatically to some level when entering a battery mode on laptop, and to back to some level when entering charger mode. There's onl...

Re: Driver Manager - notification of new available driver versions?

you have far too high expectations of a FOSS operating system. That seems to be right.. unfortunately. I guess after years of just glancing linux news and hearing all positive things about it from friends and some colleagues gave me a too rosy picture. :( Still, I don't really understand, for examp...

Re: Driver Manager - notification of new available driver versions?

You're not doing so well in the civility department either, And where exactly that happened? Did I call your writings "bollocks"? It's quite obvious who has for some odd reason lost their temper here. Do you honestly think that answering to "newbie questions" (or to any for that...

Re: Driver Manager - notification of new available driver versions?

The newest driver is just as likely to break your graphics. Hmm, getting back to this, I want to make sure that I understand this correctly. You are talking about software breaking, not hardware breaking? I'm asking because reading all of your posts here paint a grim picture of the state of the gra...

Re: Driver Manager - notification of new available driver versions?

Surely? Bollocks. The newest driver is just as likely to break your graphics. That's very civil. Maybe this was a wrong forum to join. Also if you didn't notice, this was posted on the "newbie questions" sub-forum. So you're saying that newer video drivers "could not" offer any ...

Re: Driver Manager - notification of new available driver versions?

Should be fixed? Yes, that's on nvidia and Ubuntu though. You were indeed lucky with your driver upgrade before, was it 450.66 to 450.88 or something rather than a complete branch change though? I've been doing so much learning up about linux/mint/etc. and fixing problems and annoyances (that never...

Re: Driver Manager - notification of new available driver versions?

And what about if the computer is used for gaming also? Surely the newer driver could offer benefits for performance and fixes (and yes, there's a possibility of a regression/incompatibility, like in everything what you update). IMO, if a newer driver is available (it might be a microcode update as ...

Re: Driver Manager - notification of new available driver versions?

Because changing nvidia driver can break a working installation and is not recommended unless you really need it to address a hardware issue you are facing. But the Mint Driver Manager says that the newer "455" is now "recommended"?! It just didn't notify the user of the newer v...

Thanks but that was not what I was asking for.

If the Mint Driver Manager has newer version available, why doesn't it notify the user?

Driver Manager - notification of new available driver versions?

Can't find an answer for this anywhere. The Driver Manager, is there a notification feature that would tell the user that new driver versions are available? The Update Manager just offered an update to the kernel (5.4.0-54.60, I had 5.4.0-53.59 installed) and I checked the changelog of it and it sai...
