I've tried these two settings but I get the same issue as before.
The screen goes black and then reverts to the previous configuration i.e. 1920x1080.

Yeah, 1280x720 is there and it works.
I was looking for something in between 1920x1080 and 1280x720 but it seems like 1600x900 is not supported by my laptop.
I'll make do with 1920x1080. Thanks

Thanks a lot for that.
I tried adding the modeline generated using cvt 1600 900 -r and I still get the black screen when I apply the resolution.
I also tried adding it with a lower refresh rate and still no luck.
