Re: Linux-->Linux File Transfer Speed

My experience is that smb on linux is just a lot slower. nfs, ftp, sftp, etc work a lot faster on linux. NFS can be pretty convenient if you just set it up properly client side. Either with automatic mounting, or a little script. Because of that I always used nfs, even on win10 game pc. There are pl...

Re: New windows appear behind previous ones

Yes it is very annoying. I never used Mate before, and thought it would be a nice alternative. But it's when you really start using something for a longer period, you notice the annoyances. This is something that really messes with your workflow. It's also the reason why I will go back to xfce.

Re: From a success story (LM 6) to an unsusable disaster (LM 20)

Quite honestly reading through the above I'm surprised you haven't installed Debian MATE and left it well alone already instead of getting annoyed with Mint's perceived shortcomings. The non-free ISO contains most proprietary firmware to get the system up and running easier: https://cdimage.debian....

Re: copies some files, others "no such file or directory"

Now this is not much of a help here. But, I had something like that happen to me yesterday, when i tried to make a backup. And it had nothing to do with rights on a folder or whatever. I've been using linux/OpenBSD for about 20 years or so , so I know about permissions and stuff. But I had an extern...

Re: Linux Mint is slow

That's a pretty new laptop, but apparently it has a 5400rpm HDD, which tends to be slow. A SSD/PCIe NVMe would make a huge difference in both speed and resilience. The best upgrade for even older laptops is a Solid State Drive. It's not my wallet, but buying a new laptop with a 5400rpm drive in 2020...

Re: Printer for LM

have you already tried this command from the terminal?
simple-scan -d

the output of that will probably give you a clue what is wrong.

Re: How to get a program window to appear on all workspaces.

I think it can be done with wmctrl. But then you probably have to do some scripting. there is also package in the repository called "devilspie2" that can do what you want. But it requires creating some config file for it. I used the older devilspie (version 1) A couple of years ago. So I h...

Re: LM 20.1 Cinnamon takes more than a minute to boot due to upower.service

maybe you can have a look at the output of the following command:
sudo journalctl -p3 -b
That will show you the boot messages with priority 3, thus the errors.
You might find something related to the upower service.

and perhaps at the output of this command:
systemctl status upower.service

Re: Mint won't shutdown

What version of the nvidia driver did you install? Because nvidia once in a while removes certain older chipsets from their drivers, which means they won't work with older chipsets. And your card is pretty old, from around 2007 i guess. I think the latest nvidia driver that still supports the 8400 s...

Re: Is there a way to pin executable bash script to the taskbar?

I don't know how it works in cinnamon, but in mate I would create a custom launcher on the panel, which launches something like "mate-terminal -e /path/to/script/scriptname.sh" Now in my case I use mate-terminal. I don't know what terminal is being used in cinnamon. But in xfce it would be...

(2) Kernel upgrades seem to break my system alot so i have to roll back to the previous one. : is there a way to "predetermine" compatibility with new kernels before triggering the upgrade? Unfortunately not. The proof of the pudding is in the eating. :) But you can freeze your current ke...

Re: Mate, backup and restore keyboard shortcuts

I am using Mint Mate 20.1 . And I can't find how to backup and restore my current keyboard shortcuts. for example, when I use the command: dconf dump /org/mate/desktop/keybindings/ I do get the export of the extra keyboard shortcuts that I have added, which are only 2. But not the keyboard shortcut...

Re: Printer for LM

Yeah I can also advice Brother printers. Especially the hl-xxxx network printer series. For 2 reasons: they have good emulation, so you don't even need to install the brother printer drivers. the second reason is that printing is very cheap on them. And I don't mean the buying price of the printer....

I appreciate the reply but I don't understand any of what you are telling me to do. Sorry, I'm a complete newbie when it comes to this. Re: Newbie to backing up files

grsync is pretty easy to use, and it's fast. And as a bonus it will learn you about the rsync parameters, so you might be able to use it in a script later. It's basicly a graphical front-end to rsync. grsync is in the repositories. But maybe it's a bit to bare-bones for your taste. If you want to us...

Well, it actually tells you exactly what is wrong, nl vpnkillswitch command can not be found. I guess that's the name of the script. You can put that in for exampl...
