Re: Why Linux will never be a viable alternative to microsof

People forget the years they've spent absorbing Microsoft quirks, switching to anything else means that you're back relearning. It's about familiarity, you didn't get that overnight with Windows either. Brands are Brands. Did you know what Yahoo was when they launched? No, it took some time for tha...

Re: Mint10 froze during install

Hey OrangeCrush112, Not sure if I will be much help here. I didn't resolve my issue directly. Did find out that the hard drive got bricked at some point and I had to purchase another. Ultimately, my motherboard was causing the problem. Not 100% sure where on the motherboard but the chipsets seemed t...

Re: Mint10 froze during install

No onboard graphics. No port on back of case and lspci doesn't output anything intel except for hda audio. Thats after typing "lspci -vv" into terminal.

I have tried KDE based mint, Mint 8 KDE I think. Wasn't terribly impressed with it. Seemed slower than the gnome equivalent.

Re: Mint10 froze during install

Thanks for the reply, Colyn. Been with other OS. Ran Mint 7, Mint 8 and had same issue. Quite sure unrelated to OS. Symptoms as follows: anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes after booting up (I shut it down when I am done using it because the Intel-provided CPU fan sounds like a 747 during takeoff), syste...

Mint10 froze during install

Hello all, I have a desktop that has been randomly freezing during use. I wanted to trouble shoot the freezes this evening and purchased a new HDD to replace the slightly too small one that was previously installed and start out with a fresh install of Mint 10. Managed to get new drive in and checke...

Re: Linux Mint 10 "Julia" released!

Hey Clem and all, just installed Mint 10 the other day. Just stopped in to say fantastic job. Install went smooth and everything works, as I have come to expect with Linux Mint. Must say that the GUI is quite polished, dare I say sexy even. Well done and thanks again.

All I can say is "Wow". Guess he missed the message during install that all his data would be overwritten and would he like to continue.

Reminder of why I quit using Windows

Last night at work, I got a swift kick reminding me why I stopped using Windows.. I work for a semiconductor manufacturer. We make DRAM and NAND memory. Most all of the equipment used in a semiconductor manufacturing plant or "Fab" runs on a server or PC with some flavor of Windows as an OS. Then th...

Re: help with .m4a playback problem

just had a look at this. It's only a way of altering the bit rate for MP3 format. My problem relates to .M4A files. Kam Kam/syanide- you ever get this sorted out? Kinda curious because I have several CDs I would like to rip to .m4a through rhythymbox. Tried a couple and the sound quality isn't quit...

Re: Only some video files show a preview, some an icon?

Try this:
Open a Nautilus window (your home folder for example)
Click "Edit"
Click "Preferences" (this will open the File management dialogue)
Click the "Preview" tab
Try changing preview settings such as "size" and from default of "local files only" to "always"

Increasing the "Size" did it for me.

BuzzKiller - Is it true that all you nuke squids glow in the dark? Welcome to this small but growing group within the Mint community. That would be a negative for us coner-types. In sub-speak, a coner is any non-engineering type. I can not speak for the non-coners, however. They do spend all their ...

This is the original article I read:

And I hope no government gets a hair across their ... to try something like this. If so, I want a tax break for NOT using Windows along with other incentives.

Yeah, read this article the other day. Certainly qualifies as chutzpah though I had something else go through my mind after reading (and should not be repeated due to some youngsters on this forum). As if the US$200 (minimum) per copy for a MS OS isn't enough...

Re: iPad Killer?

I wasn't aware it needed killing? LOL, that could be debated I guess. I used that title because I have seen it used with games. For instance, Halo:Combat Evolved (the original Halo game for Xbox) was the "Gold Standard" for Xbox first person shooters. When a new title was slated for release and out...

iPad Killer?

Found this this morning: http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/03/hp-slate-strikes-at-the-ipad/ Not that I would own this or an iPad but the HP certainly looks a little more promising to me because the article says it will support adobe flash. Though not stated in the article, I assume it will have US...
