I would setup virtual box with multiple VMs, one different for each DE you want to try and setup a shared directory in the host to work on your files while you do the experiments. When you are happy and decide to stick to a specific DE, setup that on your main box from scratch.

One does not need to install an OEM kernel to get a 6.5 kernel. One just needs to select the 6.5 HWE kernel in Update Manager.
