Re: Can't get any CD to boot, scrambled monitor

Thanks, maybe I'll give it a shot.
It's not surprising to hear about others using W7. It's a good compromise between the pros and cons of using XP or Vista, so let's hope it plays well with Mint. Too bad it's set to expire in August.

Re: Can't get any CD to boot, scrambled monitor

I did some more reading about the monitor problem and it turned out that by unplugging the second monitor I have fixed the problem. :D btw, I left room on my W7 hdd to install Mint. Will the installation of Mint in the unused space of that hdd negatively affect the Windows install? Or do I need to r...

Can't get any CD to boot, scrambled monitor *SOLVED*

I've installed Mint before, but haven't had good luck with my latest computer, using a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4 mobo, and 7300GT video card. There must be a bios setting (I chose optimized at first boot) that is wrong, because I've tried different CDs, ones that I know boot ok on my laptop, and both a US...

Re: Installing to a usb drive with persistent storage

One thought I had to work around the problem of Mint booting from the stick was to install GRUB after installing Mint. Does anyone know of an installer for GRUB that can run off Windows?

Re: Installing to a usb drive with persistent storage

Hi, back with the news from the pendrive front. Tried a persistent install of mint - not the live session only. Ah well. Followed all instructions carefully, but no joy. I then tried ubuntu, and that worked. I used the script from pendrivelinux which pretty well did everything automatically. Good n...

Re: Installing to a usb drive with persistent storage

Thank you for your detailed and considered reply. It seems the best thing to do will be to suck a mint and see what happens! There is deffo two options here, one is to create a live session from a usb stick, the other is to go for a full install. As far as booting off a full install stick goes, I r...

Re: Installing to a usb drive with persistent storage

AK Dave, I'm following your excellent & easy tips of installing to usb without using usb-creator. I just want to confirm the following: 1. When I'm partioning the USB flash drive as an ext2 file system, where should I set the mount point to? 2. During installation I got asked that I should install ...

Re: Installing to a usb drive with persistent storage

I have found that ubuntu works on a pendrive just the same as on a hdd. I have used it for hours on end. So far, I have installed Skype which works with my webcam just fine, and VLC for playing videos. I updated the system with all available updates. I then set up Pigeon for im, and Evolution for my...

Re: Persistent USB boot not working

To be able to use all of the 16 gig on your stick would be nice though. The larger flash drives are getting cheaper. Here's a 16gb high speed for only $25. http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3618511&CatId=2634 The larger ones are getting cheaper too. I would li...

Re: Persistent USB boot not working

Looks like it may be the UUID problem that I've had in the past with dual booting ubuntu and mint. I noticed the UUID numbers in your errors... http://www.linuxmint.com/forum/viewtopi ... =90&t=5579

Re: Persistent USB boot not working

Nice. Well, if anyone else is willing to experiment with a full install vs. a persistent install and compare speeds, it would be interesting to hear their results. Back to back testing would be great. Seems like we're both pretty happy with our installations currently, and we don't feel like deletin...

Re: Persistent USB boot not working

Interesting. I did a little reading on your link, thanks. Did you get the GT version? It seems that the 16gb sticks are more difficult to get the faster speed out of. The tech support from Corsair explains the situation. This alone would not explain the huge difference in speeds that you experienced...

Re: Persistent USB boot not working

I would hate a 15sec delay like that! I get a tiny delay, maybe half or one second before something happens when I click on an app or choose from a drop down menu, etc., quick enough, and nothing like what you experienced. My flash stick is a higher speed one, but I can't see it making that much of ...

Re: Persistent USB boot not working

- You can format a USB stick to EXT2 or 3 and install to it from a Live CD (usually with the HDD physically removed from your computer), but I have found that to be too slow for all but the smallest distros (Puppy, DSL, TinyMe, MiniMe). OK, now this is what I was able to do without a problem using ...

Re: Installing to a usb drive with persistent storage

I don't understand why your usb stick won't boot when configured like that. I've installed Ubuntu to usb that way before and had it work fine. Is this a limitation of Mint? Is it possible that Ubuntu installer is capable of installing to a usb, and the Mint one isn't? Can the developers verify if t...

Re: Persistent USB boot not working

Yes, hopefully we'll figure out the best way to run Mint from a stick. I'm wonder how much space would be left on your stick when plugged into windows, after you saw the 200mb left while it was running Mint. I bet the space shown would be different. It seems that when Mint starts running, it is oper...

Re: Persistent USB boot not working

Well, I tried mounting my 8gb stick on my mac to see what it showed. It has a total of 1.85gb of files (I have not updated on line yet, or loaded any software or drivers), with 5.6gb of space left over. It shows as still formatted as FAT32. Since my fresh install is larger than your 1gb stick, that ...
