Re: Considerations before you install

My Mint 9 x64 install is 300GB in size, primarily because I can run all of my OS's in it via VirtualBox. It's the best ever, and I look forward to installing Mint 10RC tonight.

Re: Linux Mint 9 "Isadora" RC released!

I've been a Mint user since 7 (Gloria), and Mint is the best of ALL Linux OS's, period. Currently, I'm using Mint 8 64 bit, problem free. I've evaluated Mint 9 RC on my Windows 7 Ultimate system, actually I have two SATA drives on my desktop, one for Windows, one for Mint. Things work better that wa...

Re: Need a Linux manual

Many thanks to all of your answers to my inquiry, you all have so graciously assisted me. This gives me a lot to go on, now I may finally learn the things that's holding me back, and move forward in my journey in building myself a secure platform to compute on. Best wishes to all, and long live Mint!

Re: Need a Linux manual

Did you miss it? It's on the Download page, see Link below. http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php I've downloaded and read it, it was a good source of information, but not really a walkthrough for beginners. I'm able to use Mint, as far as web searching goes. It works just as easily as Windows does...

Need a Linux manual

I've recently installed Linux Mint 8 64 bit on my new desktop and am throughly impressed with the speed and performance of the OS. It runs circles around Windows 7, as far as the browsing speed and all goes. Can anyone recommend a really good Linux manual that is for beginners, so that I can learn t...

Re: Linux Mint 8 x64 RC1 released!

Upgrading from one OS to another is not the way to go, regardless of the OS or brand (Windows, Linux or Mac). I did the upgrades from Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10, Xubuntu 9.04 to 9.10 and Windows Vista Pro to Windows 7 Pro. It doesn't work as well as a clean install does. I still have Linux Mint (7) and wil...

Re: Mint burns laptops, please don't leave it to another distr

Any OS will burn a laptop, depending on how you use it. Do you watch DVD's while on your laptop? It doesn't matter about the brand or OS that is running on it, it will get hot playing them. Do you keep your vents vaccumed or blowed out? If you don't, your laptop will run hot. I've never had an OS to...

PCLinuxOS-Live CD [SOLVED]

I have trouble running the PCLinuxOS live CD on my Dell Latitude D610. Out of several, this is the only one that won't run. It runs on my other laptop fine. It was also copied at the slowest speed and the file was defragged prior to copying. It said something about the wrong media and a possible wor...

Re: Mint burns laptops, please don't leave it to another distr

I've been running Mint for about a month now, and I've noticed no unusual heat or burning odor. And my laptop is notorious for overheating (Dell Latitude C640). In fact, it gets hotter running XP Pro. The only time that my laptop has come close to overheating was when converting ISO downloads into b...

Re: Linux Mint 7 'Gloria' KDE released!

I really love Mint! I've only had it a few weeks now, and really love the unique style of the home screen and the overall smoothness that Mint offers, not only to Linux, but the PC world altogether. I've ran several Linux distros, but none as long as Mint. I do have a backup Linux distro, moonOS. Bu...

Re: Poll: How do you use Linux Mint?

An addition to my previous post: This laptop is 70% Mint, 30% moonOS. I decided not to put all my eggs into one basket, needing a backup plan. That way, if Mint breaks, I'll have moonOS to fall back on. I really enjoy Mint, I've ran it longer than any other distro that I installed. It's features are...

Re: Finally ditching windows.

kshbenny, I wish the best for you. By completely ditching Windows, you have made a 100% commitment to Linux, and from what I gather from you, you're unhappy with Windows (so am I). You made the right decision and I commend you for it. This also is the best way to learn. Keep us informed on how you'r...

Re: Linux is a communist plot

lagognon, no offense to you at all, but mabye I don't understand all there is to know about socialism. When I think of socialism, Adolf Hitler is the first person that comes to my mind. There is no need for me to explain his actions, we all know them. This kind of government flashes in my mind whene...

Re: Linux is a communist plot

No, it is something wrong with communism and socialism. It's terrible in the year of 2009 that people hang on to these ideas. They all have failed. I don't want to belong to any of these groups. But we live in America, so you are FREE to believe in what you want, no matter how sick it is. To each hi...

I'm sorry that I forgot to tell you, the diagnostics were done in the stock (Windows) program. I have Win 2K Pro, Linux Mint and Ubuntu 9.04. I'm trying to update the driver now. Thanks for your responses.

Battery Charge Problems {SOLVED]

I bought this laptop (a Dell Latitude C640) to learn Linux on. Upon arrival, the battery was DOA. That is the only item not under warranty. So I bought a new (generic-non OEM) battery, the instructions said to charge for a minimum of 10 hours prior to using it. So I let it charge overnight (about 18...

Re: reason many will never want Linux in general.

I agree with optimise me, do we really need another Windows vs Linux forum? Aren't there more constructive things to discuss? Like getting the word out about Linux, and Mint in particular? As long as this debate continues, it may be hard to get others to use Linux. I've been spreading the word, but ...

Re: Finally ditching windows.

With GParted, you should be able to do whatever you want as far as keeping your Mint installation intact. I shrunk my Mint partition to install Ubuntu 9.04. Had no problems afterward. Keep in mind that I'm not telling you what to do with your computer, but you may need Windows for certain sites, so ...
